Haven't been on here in a while but I picked up some wood at the dump recently and am not sure what it is? It split by hand fairly easy. 100_1601.JPG 100_1602.JPG 100_1603.JPG

I was thinking some kind of maple too but the bark is different than I usually see.

Bark looks like red oak, but the grain looks maple-ish...hmm

Could be sugar maple? Do they have those in Indiana?

Looking at it again, is it just slightly punky? If so I'm saying some type of oak...

We have several types of maple. I was looking at tree bark pictures on the internet and the only maple that I think the bark looked like was called Japanese maple? I've cut quite a bit of both hard and soft maples and this just doesn't look like any I've seen.

I live in Indiana and I'd say Farmer Steve nailed it. TOH, Tree of Heaven.

I've never messed with any that I know of, but from what I understand, TOH normally is anything but easy to split...pretty low on the BTU chart too...

I think Tree of Heaven as well, some splits pretty well if it grew out of strong winds. Pretty much just a giant weed. Campfire wood IMO.

Sumac is similar, but Alianthus or Tree of Heaven is a non-native Asian cousin. Like a sumac on steroids. It gets big, grows very fast. You'll find it growing wild in city alleys, along railroad tracks, vacant lots, etc. Almost impossible to control.

Looks like tree of heaven to me too. Cut some down during the winter. Just split it couple months ago. Saw reports it rots fast even CSS. Not worth much but it was here so I’ll burn it. Dont go to any great lengths to get it IMO. Looks punked out already.
