Dumping grass at local dump and there’s piles of this. I suck at ID-ing species unless standing with a label on the tree

That was kinda my assumption as that’s over 50% of the trees in my town. May go cut on the really dead stuff and see if it’s any good. I seem to have access to lots of better trees but all need time to dry and I’m starting off bad next winter. But if this is still solid, the bark-less stuff would probably be gooder if css now.

Most of the elm here is referred to as Chinese Elm but not sure they are for sure. I have a hydro to split with and most of my wood is yard trees so twisted and full of limbs. It all sucks to split usually. Hoping I can go grab what’s there tomorrow.

Ive split fresh cut frozen green elm in the Winter rather easily by Hand. I snagged some "roadkill" red elm two Winters ago, fresh cut green. At the time i didnt know what it was. Heavy and dense and TOUGH to split by hand. The other mustve been white elm.
The pics you posted looked like decent stuff...grab it if you can. Knot free is for me as i always say!

Yep, elm. Go get it, cut it into rounds. Split it up this winter when it’s frozen, since you have hydro splitter. And it might be ready for the 2020/2021 season. Part of your 3 year plan, just not the first part.

I Don’t really know one elm from the next either. Hear lots about Chinese elm around here also. IMHO none are very good trees to have in your yard, very messy! But I like how it burns. Standing dead with the bark falling off is my staple wood

Yep I smell elm . Do they call it slippery elm be cause it slips out of the splitter . Here we called it pizz elm ... I think if you dry it you need to burn it before it rots . Elm kind like yep it burns .
We got a bunch elm once it got rotten before it dried . Burned a bunch wet Ash once . I Think BTUs I got out of it was just enough to keep it burning .
    Ok smoldering . lol.

Load two getting stacked. If I can get one decent evening this week I’ll get split n stacked. Lots of bark less ready to burn elm there. Though not as good btu wise, itl be ether than wet wood and most definitely better than burning a snowball as was said above

Elm tends to season quickly, good shoulder season wood, and has good fire starters attached to it usually.... I like to keep some it in the stacks... you did good...:handshake:

Load three for the day. Not bad for a couple hours of saw time and a couple mile run back n forth. Loving my $150 tilt bed trailer. It may be small but sure easier to load and unload than my truck. Nice to grab load n a half each time !

I’ve always been surprised they let anyone go cut out of the pile. It’s a free tree / grass dump and I’d guess if there’s ever any kind of incident at all, they’ll close it for sure. I’ll keep enjoying it till then. Supposed to rain all week but will have to keep grabbing what I can till it’s gone. It was funny, as my neighbor had a large tree dropped this morning and they’re hauling all the limbs and little crap out as I’m cutting and bringing stuff in. I helped with two very large limbs last fall on their same tree but they think the woods worth money even after I did all the cutting... I’ll probably help them cut this batch up too if they ask. Just gotta get mine done first.
