Picked up a 394 a while back and tonight I finally got a chance to work on it! I’ve been collecting parts and pieces for a while, including a new OEM case. Strip it down Parts pile.... Old case halves freshly split
Got excited and didn’t take any pictures for the new case assembly! Any how new OEM seals, bearings and gasket and I called it a night.
Looking good so far! Pics will be appreciated! I picked up that 394 a month or so ago I plan on going through, short of splitting the case. It seems to run well but it looks like it took a hit at some point. Throttle lock is missing and case is off center to the tank. So I need to figure that out. It’s good to see what you have already on the AV mounts.
Any questions go for it! I’m learning as I go on this one too. Lots of different bits and pieces for all of the AV on this thing that’s for sure! I was told this one ran, but it was missing the kill switch so I never tried it. Upon opening it up I’m seeing the piston with some scoring, cylinder with some scuffing on the exhaust side and what looks like new rings! I also noticed the cylinder has a fin busted off on top which isn’t a huge deal, but if the inside isn’t salvageable it’s going to the porting practice bin! Main reason for the new case is the fact that a bunch of the case was busted off on the clutch side and on the bottom where all the bumpers are. I got a “decent” buy on the oe one and gave it a shot! I’m also going to full wrap and a high top filter set up too. Hopefully it all comes together! Now I’m on the fence about a new P/C......
Looks like maybe some bent springs? Hopefully that’s all, let me know if you need anything we may be able to swap parts. Funny thing is, I know you are in the same boat as me having just been working on your 55 project. It’s funny when you pull the jug and see the size of the piston sitting there compared to the 55!!
OEM piston and cylinder should be pretty cheap from your dealer. Husky dropped the price a bunch on them. Should be around $150 or less. These saws don’t handle the greatest, but they are absolute tanks. I use them as my big saw when doing tree work.
The 394 cylinder is NLA (no longer available), as is the resin intake block. J.Dirt, how about some pics of the scoring? It'd be a shame to see it practiced on if salvageable. Only thing you can do if your dual port 94 cyl is dead is convert to 95 w quads, which takes a boot intake and separate impulse line (so carb needs sorted too). Also, those cases can probably be repaired. There's a few guys on the other forum that may want them if they are headed for the trash bin.
This is what my 394 looked like when I bought it. Used the MM method and it cleaned up very well. I've been using it for quite a few years, including a bunch of mill duty.
Any alternatives out there for the resin block in the after market? It’s the keystone to the best intake design I’ve come across.
I thought they were NLA and I was looking at the newer 395 p/c’s As well as the intake goodies and carb mod to fit it up. I’ll get some pics of the scoring, but there’s a good chance I can clean her up and toss a new piston in. It doesn’t look as bad as that pic you posted either so it should be useable. As for the cases I figured I’d offer them up if anyone wanted them. There’s some serious talent out there and I’d hate to toss something with a good base for someone to build off.
Humm, what's the MM method? I have a cylinder or two that look like simpler and could use some attention!
View attachment 210457 Trying not to hijack, now I’m real interested in the mounts. A couple things I found interesting. First is the production year seems to be outsides Mike Acres’ info. Discontinued in 96. Tag is 98. More important, front AV is solid and seems to be slipped out. I’m hoping to loosen them all up and re-seat this.
Just kidding keep it going! I need to look into this stuff too since my av bumpers were missing due to the case being broken and worn down. I did manage to run into another 394 a week or so back and took a few pictures. I also printed out some of the parts diagrams to see what should go where. It looked like this saw was missing the rear bumpers as well, must be a common thing with these.
