As many know I've been doing some battle with my back. I finally gave in to going to the MI spine center because my back was not getting better after the fall back in 2012 and again in December 2013. Of course to add to that I fell a few times on that danged ice we had most of the winter.

To go with their program it was necessary to have two tests. I was told the first one could give me up to 8-10 hours (or something like that) of relief but then the pain would return. A week later a second series of shots would give me maybe 1-2 hours of relief. I guess it is something the State requires for this treatment.

What happened is that they put me on a table face down. They asked if I wanted to be sedated but I did not choose that option. There were 4 needles inserted on the right side of the spine and I do not remember how many times they shot stuff into each needle but do know the first was lidocaine to numb things. I was warned before they stuck needles in but that was nothing as it was more like when they draw blood from you and it was barely felt.

About the 4th time they was giving me stuff it began to hurt, a lot. But I stood it and soon he said now the needles will go into the left side. I told him that should be good because it was the right side that was hurting worse at the time. Wrong! I was almost off the table a couple times but got through it. They told me to go home and do anything that I knew would cause my back to hurt bad. Well, that was easy as almost everything did. I had total relief for about 5-6 hours.

A week later the second round was taken and he asked if I'd stay in Lansing because he feared by the time I got home the medicine would wear off before I could be active. So we went to a large store and walked around shopping. No problem. So we headed home (about an hour's drive) and I got active again. I think it was about 4 hours before the pain returned.

The doctor was pumped and certain this would really fix me up. To say I was pumped up would be an understatement as I've had terrible back pain for almost 30 years now. So again I was on the table and this time in addition to the medicine they also froze some nerves. I went home and what a disappointment. No relief at all. The following week was a repeat with no relief.

Another week went by and I returned for a try at my neck. This was test 1 and it did nothing. The second week we discussed this and decided to try some steroids in the neck. It worked! I now have full and free movement of my neck. I can even look up again! Yes, I get some aching from time to time and once in a great while I'll get like a shock but it is very liveable.

Three weeks later I returned and the doctor wanted to try some steroid in the back and I agreed. Sadly, it did nothing. I was then told to expect to be this way until I go to meet the Lord first hand. Sad, but we'll make it.

On being off the forum. Most know why I got off for a while and I still feel the same way. Basically I have always felt that when I felt that I could no longer be of any assistance to others, it would be time to leave. When I was unnecessarily slammed by someone on this forum, I felt that time had come so got off. Yes, many have asked me to return and I thank them and have decided to give it another go. It's good to be back.

Great to have you back, sorry to hear someone was a jerk to you. Even sorrier to hear the back treatment was a flop.

I am glad you are back Dennis. It is too bad that your relief from pain can't be complete. You have shared your journey with us over the years and so have other members of their own challenges. We are one big on-line family here. Your posts are valuable and very insightful. This site being new, may not have a large amount of new members to wood burning, but we all share a mutual enjoyment of the experience of being outside and gathering as well as the burning of wood.

I may not post that much, as there are numerous members that can better answer questions here, but I try to add a little something to help make this a great place to hang out. I believe that the members here show great mutual respect towards one another. It may not be perfect, but the mods try and keep order, and not let things get twisted up. See you around.

Sounds like the process I went through for a medial branch block. Your state might require a process, but what you describe is exactly what I was having done.

    Back pain sucks!

Good to have you back. Even just talking about your back pain could help someone. Anytime you post it could help someone even if it just makes someone laugh or gives them an idea how to do something that you do a certain way because of your pain.
