Stopped by the dump this AM and there were massive chunks of this. I thought elm, but it split like a charm. Do you think it's mulberry? IMG_20190430_20264.jpg IMG_20190430_28824.jpg IMG_20190430_34941.jpg

I got a little more at the dump, but most of the big chunks were gone. Either the loader buried them, or someone else took them. Oh well. Still not sure it's mulberry, the bark doesn't have that yellowish tone.

It doesn't resemble any maple I've ever found. The wood is tannish colored. It's pretty lightweight and splits like poplar. Judging by the chunks, it was a big old branchy thing.

It's not mulberry, and I don't think it's maple either, even though the bark looks similar in those pictures.

Eastern hemlock, I'm guessing this because we don't have them here that I've seen and I've never seen an endgrain like that with that bark.
The wood looks much like willow to me or something in the poplar family.

I picked up a short stack of wood from a neighbor that had been sitting out for quite some time. Swore it was hemlock due to the bark and the light weight. When I cracked it open with the splitter, I realized that I had red maple in my hands. Another vote for maple here and probably a yard tree.

Definitely not oak, much lighter wood. The tool is a Helko Vario 2000 heavy splitting axe, I love it.

Here are some more pics. The bark wants to come right off. IMG_20190501_35994.jpg IMG_20190501_49447.jpg Definitely not a conifer, the twig has little leaf buds. Whatever it is, I doubt that it's high in BTUs.

Some more fresh splits, and a twig... IMG_20190501_46163.jpg IMG_20190501_54264.jpg
If I did, it would be matchstick-sized.

Realize there are some 100 different types of maple. Plus what nurseries graft 4 yard trees to get the bright red colors with different growth patterns. These are especially popular in the yard tree variety.

bottom piece in bottom pic looks like elm. I have had very freshly cut elm split very easy.

ive never seen it get that big, but the smaller pieces have bark that looks like aylanthus (tree of heaven). very lightweight straight-grained wood.

The ailanthus I've come across has almost white wood. This has faded somewhat over a few hours, but is still tan colored. IMG_20190501_43114.jpg
