I'm curious as well. No matter what it'll come in handy even if we plant trees & bushes in places. There's enough posts going in the ground over the next couple years that it's worth it.

Once it finally arrives, you know I'll post pictures. Start betting now if my first post hole digging experience will be a success or a complete failure.

Gonna get a bunch of grade 5 shear bolts.

Hmm... Let us know how that works out. I'm in a very similar situation.

The three things this property has in abundance is water, clay, and rocks.

I've got a project in mind that will require setting posts as well, so its becoming a matter of financial reality.

Better to purchase a post hole digger, or rent a machine dedicated to the task??

The area I want to put up a pole barn has already been built up & graded. The question will be what if anything was used as fill. I need to dig 10 holes, my luck, I'll dig 9 with no issue, then the tenth will be blocked by a ten foot slab of granite! Our frost line goes deep, about 60" during a rare shoeless winter with real cold temps. I doubt I'll get 60" down, more likely 50", which I'll be using a bar and hand post hole digger. Despite the heavily debated subject, I'll be putting termite preventative and tar on the 6x6 & burying in concrete. I'm going with the county line post hole digger made by speedco, and the 12" auger with replaceable tips and cutting plates sold at tractor supply. They have great reviews and are priced pretty well. The digger is for 15-35 hp, I'm at about 20 if I remember correctly, slightly on the low end of things.

I need to read up on that pressure knob that's just under the seat in the front. Some with smaller tractors don't have enough power to pull the auger back out of the ground, so I'll be going down slow & cleaning out the hole often.

Definitely the right way to go.

I've seen videos where people get it stuck, and rock the tractor forward and back.

I've also read/heard that is exactly the wrong thing to do.

I'm in the "neighborhood club" at tractor supply, I occasionally get 10% off, one just came in, so I'm using it for the post hole digger. The cost is $599, another $179 for the 12" auger take 10% of those. I'd buy one. Lots of happy customers on YouTube with that particular brand, great reviews. Double check the tractor capacity vs the specs on tractor supply, they make different sizes for larger and smaller tractors.

12” auger is big. You may need a smaller one to drill a pilot hole first. When they dug the holes for my pole barn they hit boulders that they had to rent an excavator to remove.

I was thinking that. I'll probably pickup a 6" or 9". When I dug the 4 footers for the deck roof, things went smooth until the last hole. Then I dug 3 feet out and was able to move the huge rock over. Pita!

If ya don't like rocks n boulders ....you would hate it here.
I thought about renting an augers to put up a fence for a little privacy from the new neighbors..:(....I don't how my kioti would handle one....17 horse to rear PTO. Little concerned with tractor weight for stability.....2000# s with bucket.

I have one of these. It helps me to get the rocks out of my garden.

I can dig a few holes, but need ten here to start, that's a bit much. I need to keep my energy for fixing the portopotty at the g2g.:D

Rockyslvania the Appalachian trail thru hikers call it. Kioti would do well with a post hole digger meant for sub compact. Should handle smaller rocks. I think going slow, cleaning out the hole often is key, but this is based off of YouTube videos I've watched for my specific tractor. If I get it stuck, I'll need to break out my massive pipe wrench and reverse the auger manually. Top from my dad..... I wonder how he knows this?
