i was loading yesterdays score and went to pick up this 6' long skinny log and noticed...its alive!!! Not sure what species (sorta looks like choke cherry or ornamental tree), but the thing is growing again. I had tossed it into the pile back in February and it was, or so i thought, cut and dead. I saw willow splits do this many years ago in my dads stacks...sprout twigs after being CSS for several months. Im tempted to dig a hole, plant it and see what happens!
Willow will do this for sure - I've seen willow rounds sprout after a full winter of being cut and laying in the dirt. almost feel bad throwing them in the fire after they tried so hard. Lol
I too have seen willows sprout after being cut for months. They just dont die. I had a neighbor who would take pieces of willow branches, soak them in water and use it as a rooting hormone for transplanting plants.
cutting a cookie and planting it might work for a while but when things dry up in the summer would probably die for lack of moisture. Worth a try just the same. Al
I was cutting at my honey hole today and this oak was growing again. It has been on the log deck at least two months. I believe it is a pin oak. Maybe ill leave this one til late Fall so i can get more cordage out of it!!! Ill bring some miracle grow on the next trip!
Hey Brad wassamatta with that big bruiser on the left? It looks lonely. Think it wants to hop in the truck and go for a spin
44" diameter at cut end. Forked branch farther up so it cant be rotated. Ill tackle it eventually. Maybe after other logs are out of the way. Put 36" bar on 460.
That pic of your honey hole set up looks awesome. I wish I had the space to work on whole logs, would love to get the saw time in and have better control of the length of my rounds (as opposed to scrounging rounds already cut by folks discarding then) I have a few places I know I can get loads of oak logs but I just need to figure out some winch and parbuckle set up on my trailer. And then there is that issue of unloading back at my place. And that storage space issue. ♂️. Clearly I have a lot to sort out. Seems like I found a great place learn and get ideas!
I found this honey hole purely by accident...literally driving by. Its not mine, 5 minutes from home. This was my original post two months ago. This Score Could be Epic! It is nice to be able to cut to your own specs. I normally scounge like you do Road-side Oak, but have been fortunate to score full trees. I usually have 10-12 cord CSS and now have triple that. Be careful what you wish for! Yes this is a GREAT place to learn. I have myself since mid February when i joined.
Ok just checked those pics on the original post. Truly epic find. I’d be sneaking out every chance I had to pull wood out of there! Not sure that would be healthy for day job or family aspects of my life!
