ive finished removing all the splits from the if i have these trees cut down, you can have the wood! Oakee dokee!!! score yesterday. Most of it got stacked next door at my wood hoarding friends house and about a cord came to my house. About 3 & 2/3 cords total between the two trees. IMG_4391.JPG each rack is 4x4x16 inside dimensions ...2 cords each. IMG_4392.JPG front rack was filled October-November, this one is 2/3 white oak, balance red oak. IMG_4394.JPG
face is pin oak, balance is red and white.
IMG_4393.JPG two rows white oak and back row pin. Need a little to fill in. Racks were made from 2x and 4x4 cull lumber purchased from Lowes. Some i had on hand. Firewood is no the only thing i hoard!

thanks Scampie ! how do you folks over there measure firewood units? Is it by the cubic meter or is there a "standard" size?

Mostly in cubic meter but also in "stere" (that's about 80% of a cubic meter). We also use cords.

MikeyB i will cover these within a month or so. I use tarps at my house but my landlord has complained of the "eyesoreness" (is that a word?) of them. I was considering buying a roll of heavy guage clear plastic which i used to use a lot for work, but my GF's mom had given me some thick black plastic which was a cover for their inground pool years back. Its a big sheet and ive yet to cut any off of it. Heavy guage too. How oversized do you make your covers? Ill assume (uh oh) that is your stack in the avatar picture?
How goes the work on that big oak? Progress pics?

In most areas you can get by without top covering until fall or early winter. However, in some of those areas out east, down south and PNW it can pay to top cover sooner.

I kick myself now Backwoods Savage for scrapping a few sheets of the corrugated steel roofing last year from a demo job. It was some THICK guage stuff.

I hear that with the tarps. I keep a couple for quick covers, but have been trying a couple of different methods. Have some 1/2” X 4’ X 8’ rigid insulation board. I rip them in half length wise and use them on my 16’ long stacks. Rubber roofing membrane, and some corrugated roofing (not metal) all seem to look more appealing than tarps so far.
Going to try to get more of the black oak sp,it and stacked this coming weekend if the weather permits.

The plastic is nice. I use 6 mill from Home Depot. I just buy a 20x 100 roll. I double it up and it lasts. I use the black. I just give mine a 8-12 in overhang and staple it down with a staple gun.

Hows it going with that pine BeechNut? Did you get it all done or has it been too muddy?

I still have about 2 cords in the rounds yet to css. Like you said it's muddy so gotta wait for things to dry up some. I cut up a couple ash that blew over down the road from the house but that's about it for the last few weeks.
