Put my feeder up last night and they are on it already. Spring is here! (They probably have been here for several weeks but it just occurred to me to put the feeder back up.) I'd take you a picture but they are a little harder than an eagle to photograph.
Apple and pear trees are in full bloom up here, so it should be anyday here. The orioles arrived this morning.
The birding society is telling us to put raisins and seeds and suet out for the birds, MNR telling us to NOT put out suet, seed etc because of the bears. So, I'll continue to follow my routine of having plenty of flowers that are appropriate for the birds. And water.
Well, there's really nothing you can't do. However, the consequences can be the killer. We have a neighbor about 600' down the road whose trail cam in the front yard took a pic of bear.....on their front porch. I've found bear scat in our woods just a couple hundred feet from the house.
It is too suburban where I live for bears, except the occasional yearling that gets chased out by its mother and winds up in a populated area. It is fun watching the birds work the flowers in the garden. In the fall the are usually 2 or 3 hanging around here, fighting over the feeder.
Had my first hide and seek of the spring/summer with my bird feeder. Bear got it overnight and I found it a few hundred feet into the woods. Time to take it in overnight. Happens a few times a year if I leave it out overnight, so far this feeder has been bear poof as well as squirrel proof going on 7 years now. Also saw the first baby finches this morning as well as a few cardinals in the past week or so.
The robins started building their nest yesterday, right on time. They chose the neighbors deck this year. Several times they have nested on the girder on my deck. It is pretty cool bring able to look right into their nest and watch the eggs hatch and then the chicks grow and fly off. My son got his science project out of it one year.
Weve got a couple of hummingbirds that buzz around the house in the early evening. Ill be sitting on the front steps and get buzzed by them I must be in the way of their flight path.
Must be nice ! We're still about 3 weeks behind for spring. The apple and pear trees have just started to show some blossoms. Maybe I,ll put my Hummer feeders out anyway, just to make me feel like spring is really here.
