Couldn’t resist leaving another load of locust laying in the pile at my secret cutting spot. So I went back today and loaded up. Also got a load of ash that I don’t get to last trip. [IMG]

Totally different than pin oak. Locusts is even worse when water gets under the bark and ferments a bit. Smells like rotten fish when splitting.

I think it smells a little like licorice, but in a bad way.

Nice haul.... In 20 years of cutting firewood, I only came across 2 good scores of Locust. One was only 1 truckload of free stuff, and just this past week was 6 loads.

the few logs ive seen along the road have been sitting for a while. If thats the case maybe ill pass. Does the smell subside when it seasons like the pin oak?

Don't pass it up! It doesn't rot. Ants/termites might get into it though. It can look as ugly as sin, and still burn great.

Smells like damp stinky ashtray mixed with gym socks and a fermented sour smelling cow pasteur. I guess its hard to describe so maybe its a smell unto itself. I think this happens because it's so rot resistant that it just lays for years fermenting in the cambium layer instead of breaking down and rotting in the usual way like most wood. That's my theory, don't quote me

well Urban Woods, i decided to check out the locust ive been driving by since last May when the tornados mustve taken it down. I pulled into the driveway off the road, peeled off a piece of bark, gave it a good sniff and barely any smell, i peeled off a second piece only to find a herd of these little fellows. IMG_4390.JPG ..maggots!!! I guess the wood smelled good enough for them...a virtual smorgasbord!
I dont mind ants or even termites (see my post "termite be insects in the wood" from last week), but maggots SKEEVE me out. I left the wood there for their enjoyment! I guess you guys were right about the smell! I may only take it if i find it green!
