Has anyone modified a vertical/horizontal splitter to a push thru style ? My Husky is both vertical and horizontal ( why do they even make a splitter like that is beyond me )
and I was thinking about doing some mods to it but really not sure it’s worth it .

I really need a splitter with a 4-6 way and those commercial units are expensive !

they make them vertical because when you have a 30"+ round it gets kind of heavy to lift up onto the beam.
Unless I'm not comprehending the why, wouldn't be the first time..

I have spent hours watching videos of splitters and thinking about the design. My wood consumption is 5-7 cords a year so I can’t justify a fancy splitter. Some of that wood is split by hand and the rest with my husky. I try to work efficiently and minimize steps when I can. Plus the wood tongs and pickaroon help with speed and conserving energy. If I burned more or sold firewood then I would upgrade.

I’ve had my husky 20 plus years , that vertical splitting is for “ backwoods” folks . Lol

That's my 288 with a 24" bar buried. I'm not going to try and pick that up.
    I'll take backwoods as a compliment :)

I guess I'm backwoods also. I crack down the big stuff vertically, and finish off horizontally. A 30" oak round can't be picked up, so....

Back to the topic of the push thru splitters .

I need a lot of small splits for the syrup evaporator ( 2 full cords approx) and also for a local campground that I sell firewood at .
House burns normal size splits. Takes a lot of time splitting 1 round into small stuff . Just not sure if it’s even worth trying to modify the husky .

thats still too big to be splitting horizontally. too hard to control, hate to have a half fall off on my foot, filter or engine. Even keeping it in the grapple so that wouldn't happen is just too much dicking around when you can just flip it up and split into quarters.
I don't know though I don't have toys like that to really know..
Doubt those log catchers could handle the weight for too long either. Maybe I wouldn't want to find out.
    Yes grapple is nice.

Push through is nice for wood the is all about the same size and straight, usually with a multiple wedge. If the wood requires multiple passes, you spend a lot of effort moving it back in front of the wedge.

I burn about 10 cords per year, so I bought a pricey American cls two or three years ago. I got the boonville woodsman field day price, which helped. I thought about a conveyor as mine has trays, but my spending needs to slow down.

This splitter was a nice compromise between really pricey & too small. That's a 28" Red Oak round up there. I've got a conveyor bought if I ever go get it. I did make a shim to raise the 4 way up because I split bigger for the boiler.

I've heard a 6 way wedge is not a good wedge, the wood supposedly jams up real bad. If I want a splitter to deal with big wood, it would have a box wedge with a pull back arm, like the video of Joe's splitter above.

I have a Timberwolf with fixed horizontal beam. The fixed wedge has a slip on 4-way wedge. Aside from a log lift or a flywheel style splitter, this is just about ideal for me. I also don't care for vertical splitting and find noodling more relaxing than muscling big boys.

As an aside (and not a complete derail), which member mounted his splitter to his trailer? Past 6-10 months ago, maybe?

I can’t find that thread. :hair:

    Some folks never learn!

How much syrup did you make this year? Sorry I never found the time to get over. I had planned on it but it just never happened.

Also, you are invited to our get-together on May 3-4. It will be a dandy this year for sure. Let me know if you can make it.

I have a 6 way wedge on my tw6 and it rarely comes off. If you're trying to pry the splits out by hand, they do tend to get caught up but why do that when I have more rounds to push through and 28 tons of power to do it?

How do you like the 4 way AC ? It’s a manual adjustment correct ?
