Never split any or burned any. Friends dropped off some ash and basswood from their yard... Spring clean up underway. One wood shed is empty... So I'm not turning it away. But is it decent firewood?
Imo, not very good and not worth the effort to css it. No better than cotton wood. Sorry for the bad news.
Thanks for the feedback...I've had cotton wood before and I can't say it's awful in the stove... It lights up the secondaries really good.
I've burned Basswood. Not the best but good for reducing beds of coals, short fires, and mixing with the good stuff. I have some in my yard and am thinking about cutting some for these purposes
You will not believe the weight difference between wet basswood and dry basswood. Unbelievable! But, it'll be great for starting fires and or the fire pit.
Eh, at least it's not balsa.. I had some weird wood a couple of years ago that had very thick bark but felt almost like it was balsa when dry...never did figure out what it was.
Could've been basswood. It's ok. I won't go out of my way for it, but when it's blocking my trail, like I've got 2 at my wood lot now, I'll cut it, and split it for shoulder season. It seems with how Winters have been that I need more shoulder season wood than the heavy hitters.
Unless the trunk has much thicker bark(one inch plus) this ain't the same stuff. I already have it split. Just did four quarters regardless of the diameter.
I posted this a few weeks back Suburban wood snob i posted this a few weeks ago Suburban wood snob "Stumped" on ID?
Nope and nope. Well, it's not the same as the thick bark 'balsa' . The bass wood has darker bark and more undulating ridges
Suburban wood snob if you have the time, make some kindling from the bass and you won't be sorry. Another thing is if you know of some carvers or whittlers, they love it.
For kindling and shoulder season. But don’t underestimate the need for that type wood. Especially when it’s delivered right to you for free. But the ash is good stuff.
Basswood, cottonwood, and pine. All junk wood. Especially for the horders near me. That leaves more for me. I get most of my wood from tree services i take all the above when nobody else will. I burn quantity not quality. A lot of “ junk wood “ is better than no wood.
