i might have just made a huge score. I hooked up with a local tree company to take a dump trailer load or two per week from hardwood tree jobs. Still working out logistics, but I am optimistic. It’s a 14k dump, so these could be some major scores. Trying to throw a little cash at this to sweeten the deal........fingers crossed!!!!
Just be prepared for anything and everything size and length wise. I have a couple different tree guys that drop off but only 1 who drops a lot. Once or twice a week sounds great. I may not get any for 2 months and then there's 5 truckloads in 2 days and a truck load can be up to 3 cords. Be sure to have plenty of space available for him to dump...you will most likely need more than you figure because some loads get hung up in the truck and logs get spread over a large area. I prefer to get no more than 3 loads at a time so I can use the tractor to pile them up more neatly.
I had a deal with a tree company as well. He loaded me with hardwood, I just secured the load and brought it home. The problem, as jrider mentioned, is that they wanted me to take everything. Over a few years I ended up with gnarly pieces, huge crotches and a ton of peces with hardware (cable, chain, eyebolts) used to try and save the trees he eventually cut. I ended up burning tons of stuff I couldn't or wouldn't use. I had enough manageable wood and stuff without metal to be picky. I also have enough area to burn huge piles. I would do it again, it's just something to be aware of.
Good luck! I've gotten way too picky to ever let a service dump at my property because I dont want all the undesirable stuff that goes with it, but then again usually around here its guys trying to get rid of a knotty 5' diameter silver maple yard tree.
Wood cut to all different lengths does suck. I had good luck giving a tree guy a mingo marker. There are still some odd ball lengths in what he drops off but the complete randomness is no more.
So the deal if we can make it work is I show up with my dump trailer at the job. Already threw the idea of a payment for good hardwoods only. The lengths and stuff even diameter is fine as I have a big saw. I just do not want softwoods at all. We shall see how this goes.
