Been working the last few days at cutting and splitting the dead blown over black locust trees behind the house. So far I’ve cut 6 or 7 and still have a few more to cut and split. One is hung up in a maple along the neighbors fence. Didn’t realize how much of this there was back there until I got started! This will find its home next to the oak, Osage orange and locust stack I posted a while ago! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Was my go to wood when i lived on a 75 acre farm in upstate NY as there were 45 acres of woods (rest fields) which consisted of a couple of nice locus groves and a lot of second growth hardwoods. It burns long and hot with amazing coals that are a wonderful blue / white tint and cranks out some serious heat. I burned it for years along with putting up a heck of a lot of fence post as it is one of the most rot resistant wood in the forest, did miss burning locust when I moved out here to MA and was heating my house with a wood stove. Nice Score !
I’m glad you that. I wanted to start looking for the Black Locust but sounds like I won’t find any around here. I did a get a blowdown from last nights wind. I can’t decide though if this White Ash or Elm. Most likely Ash, but I did cut a much small elm about 40’ away last fall, so in my mind it could be Elm.
Good looking haul Mike13. Will you burn that next season? Ive never cut nor burnt locust and all the talk has wanted me to find some.
I’ll burn some of it next year that is already pretty dry. Saving it for the real cold of winter. Plenty of Ash to burn otherwise thanks to the EAB. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Love my locust.....have some going right now. Hate to burn it in this milder weather but I have been so busy with other stuff and I still have some close to the house.
There is a lot of Black Locust around these parts. One trick for any newbies out there, it grows in groves and has white flowers in the canopy in June around here. As you drive to work or wherever at that time, look for the white flowers. You'll be surprised how much is around.
Pulled out the last of this locust that I cut behind the house about 2 years ago. This was the one hung up in a maple along the neighbor’s fence. Kinda forgot I still had some laying back there and didn’t have room in any of the stacks for it. Got it all split. Next up is stacking it and getting it covered. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Locust? Black Locust? Did someone say BLACK LOCUST? Thats gonna be some awesome firewood next year. One thing i love about BL is the fact it can be left for years and is still good to burn and the bark is off. I cut some today felled by a storm back in August and some of the bark was already loose.
