Looking for experiences with this small stove, heating capacity, burn times ect. I'm looking at installing this stove in a 20x30' off grid full time log cabin with loft in N Wisconsin. I'll be mostly be burning Aspen since that is probably 90% of what I have on my land but I do have some better hardwoods for those colder nights. Thanks
Believe I'd at least look at the new Woodstock survival stove. May as well install something that burns overnight without tending. Unless the reviews etc. that I came across for the 602 cb were incorrect it doesn't appear to do that well? Have fun looking! Survival Hybrid Wood Stove
I had a much older 602 with just a baffle in the top and the round air input on the door instead of a window. For the CB it appears they've reconfigured the baffle so as not to lose much/any fuel height in the firebox but at the expense of a little bit of depth in the firebox to feed air to the secondary baffle/plate. I have a "copy" of that design made by someone else. The burn time is the same: 2-4 hours pine/oak. If you need 50BTU per square foot in the coldest days of Winter 20x30 is 600 square feet. In theory you want 30,000 BTU capacity. The 602 is rated for 28 or 29,000 BTU. If you need 60BTU per square foot for a marginally insulated cabin the 602 is going to not keep up in the exoretme cold. The 602CB is what, $1,100 ? Pretty sure the Survival Hybrid is the same max output, the advantage being a little more control over the heating curve and possibly lower output although the minimum is stated to be 15,000 BTU. The Absolute Steel supposedly has a heat range of 10,000-48,000BTU, but it is also twice the price and twice the stove.
Thanks guys. I figured the 602 would be pushing its limits but the 10" logs and R50 ceiling should help, also will have a propane wall furnace to help as needed. I've read burn times anywhere from 3-8 hours, if I can squeek out 6 with good hardwood I'd be fine with that. I seriously looked into the WS Survival stove but just dont like the look. I wish woodstock would make a soapstone box stove, not a real fan of their new steel look. The Jotul Black Bear is another one I like but it would stick out into the room too much, the 602 will fit nice and snug in a corner saving room.
I think with Aspen you'll be LUCKY to get 3 hours of usable heat out of that little stove. IIRC; the firebox is only 1cu.ft. And 16" logs is the absolute max length you can fit in there.
Yeah, I've read the 16" splits only fit on the bottom and the baffle gets in the way if you try to stack more 16's on top. I'll be cutting everything 14-15".
I've had the Aspen, moved to a F 100, F 3 and now F 400 Castine. My dad runs a 602. It is a very capable heater with limited run times. It works very well for their application. I really liked the F3 for ease of use and it is a very nice stove. All the Jotuls I had were from CL and two of the three were blue/black enamel which was a great score.
About a 15'x 25' room with high ceilings. Average insulation and newer windows. It heats it very well.
