I’m out. Forgive me all you hardcore hoarders. I walked past again with the dogs this morning and it’s just too much. I don’t need that much more wood to get me back to my 3 years and I have recently made a good contact with a guy who does stump grinding who said all the tree services he works with are always trying to get rid of wood. Hopefully I can grab what I need through him in the next couple months. Plus I still have all this sitting in my processing area that I have to move. I wouldn’t mind some silver or other quick seasoning wood though because I have a lot of green oak right now.
That's my typical find size wise but I'd probably pass just because I was handed the $&1tty end of the stick. "An old family saying"
And if the homeowners didn't treat you well or appreciate your work, the whole deal would leave a sour taste.
you made the right choice g60gti. After seeing your limited processing area i agree with your decision. I feel your pain though as its hard to turn away wood, especially when its that close to home. Sounds like you have a good connection already. Tell them specifically what you are looking for and they may be able to work with you. Be careful with tree services though, i know someone who got a load dumped for free and it was this big gnarly tree that was covered in mud. They are glad to get rid of the crap wood.
I appreciate how most of the guys feel but if it were me and I did not have my own woodlot to cut in, I'd still be all over that like a fly around...something. I am not a fan of noodling but a sledge and a couple wedges would make short work of those big rounds and then you could handle it. You would get a lot of good wood close to home and I'm sure it would be appreciated that you clean up the mess for them. You both would win.
I'd work on it instead of sitting home watching the boob toob, but I wouldn't work on it instead of better wood next door.
If they are the right length, it’s no big deal to try splitting them with maul or wedge and sledge. They need to be broken down anyway, what difference does if make if you do it on the sidewalk or at home? If they are crossgrained and don’t split then I’d walk away.
395 is made for this size tree. Noodle a tick-tack-toe pattern in the trunk pieces and get 9 blocks out of each one. You'll get a lot of barkless splits which is a bonus for dealing with the big stuff.
Exactly. There is a lot of wood there. Why did you get a 395 if you don't like processing big wood (especially free, on the ground, a few blocks from the house)? I understand big trees are more work, but it is also more wood. Wouldn't take that long... Leave the homeowners enough noodles to start fires for 10 years...lol.
I've got a silver maple trunk about that size to deal with at my rental property. Ground is still too soft to work it up, but when it's time I guess I'll tow the splitter over and bring some pipes to roll the rounds on. No option to pass on it really.. It's taking up a sizable but if the yard! Everything small enough to cut easily has already been css. I agree with billb3 and others, though - it's not going anywhere, and it's close by enough to whack at it a little at a time. Unless other wood is available and easier, in which case time management says it's time to get to work on the easier stuff instead!
Know when to say when. Save your energy and effort for easier access wood. I won’t bust your chops about passing it up.
I see what you did there. Fred Flinstine drove a rock car with wheels heavier than that and bare feet. There’s nothing to fear but fear itself. LOL Perfectly understandable to pass on it though. No reason to kill oneself for something they really don’t need.
being a Stihl guy i didnt realize how big that Husky is. Even if you dont want the wood, looks like an excellent way to play for you new "toy". Best of luck with it...the saw that is.
