One thing is for sure, wood in the round is very rarely seasoned. I’ve only found some dead, down, barkless, suspended off the ground Locust that was ready to burn.
Is it close so you could check it out after work? Looks like its been sitting too long as there's punky logs.
Yes I just split up some maple rounds from a blowdown, which had bark falling off as I was loading into the Mule. I split my bark less rounds, and the moisture meter indicated 25% on the split area. I do think that it’s drying time might be quicker than a cut down tree of the same moisture. Just an odd instinctual feeling.
The free pile looks like it had a bit of punky stuff in it. It might also be totally solid. For free it's worth a look.
