Almost freezing here this morning. And no rain. The rain predicted for the weekend was minimal. It has been an unreal dry winter for us. Yesterday I noticed that the salal bushes which are normally green all year round, have brown leaves on them. I don't think I have ever seen that before. Salal is gathered almost year round and sold to be used as filler for flower bouquets. The community where Mom lives had a brush fire which burnt two houses. The fear was that it would burn more but other communities sent fire fighters to help. Gave everyone a real scare.

Not sure what hip resurfacing is, or what's entailed, but doesn't sound great.

Hope you get mobile soon, and not in much pain.

They will be out today around here after that wind yesterday. Ponds are stocked with trout and the trollers will be out. If there is late ice, they will stock through the ice.

Yup. They were posted here on the 15th if I remember right. They really aren't too bad so far this year but the frost is coming out slowly, which helps. Mail lady told me there were only 2 roads she could not get down last week but I think the county was out fixing them on Friday. Those 2 roads are on the list to get new gravel this year. Maybe some ditching work too.

Been puttering around the property yesterday and today, did a bit of pruning, lopping thornbrush from around one of the ash that needs dropped, and general yard cleanup.

    Gonna make a nice fire...

Not sure why the previous owners put a fire pit under a tree, but meh.

That poplar is due to come down anyway.

Can you show me what the "frost" looks like? What did it do so the mail lady could not get down those roads?

The frost will cause roads to bulge and heave. When the frost comes out on a dirt/gravel road, not only will it bulge and heave, but it also gets wet, soggy and soft. This is when any traffic (especially heavy trucks) will cause damage to the road by sinking, causing ruts, larger pot holes, soupier (thanks papadave ) conditions......that's why the mail lady can't get down some roads.

Still a bit too breezy for my liking.

Besides, I didn't add the leaves at that point, got a couple piles on this afternoon.

    Thanks yooperdave.

wildwest in this case it is on gravel roads. I'm sure you have the same situation out there in the springtime. Roads get awfully muddy for sure. Paved roads (usually not so much federal roads as they are built to different standards) the frost will actually push the pavement up breaking it all up or in some cases just causing big potholes.

It is funny watching the roads in the spring when in most places the frost is all gone but in those areas that have big woods alongside where the sun can't hit the roads, the frost comes out slower. You'd think that people would remember that from year to year but most don't. Then they don't understand why they can drive fast but then suddenly hit a muddy area.

Or just drive down a road and see wet spots and it hasn't rained. It looks like there may have been some giant moles pushing the mud up. It is frost coming out.
