I was given a log splitter sans cylinder from a co-worker. However, it doesn't have a filter inline. Google seems to suggest that running a hydraulic system without a filter is on par with murder, so I'd like to rectify that before I break something expensive. Can you guys give me any guidance regarding which filter to buy? I am new to hydraulics, and I don't know what flow rate/pressure/particle size I should be looking for. Also, is there any harm in running the system without the filter? I am not looking to split wood, but I would like to get the motor running/tuned.
Look at Northern Tool online to get an idea of the filter setup. You'll need to do a little plumbing. I wouldn't be afraid of running it for test purposes without one.
It’ll go on the suction side. I wouldn’t worry about the absolute filtration level. The system is simple and inexpensive to work on should there be an issue. If you want to be sure of it after you run it a few hours replace the filter and cut the used one open to see if it’s making metal. The pump is the only thing that really could unless you have some major cylinder issues which would show up in poor operation. A kit from northern or somebody else would be more than adequate. X2 on testing without. It’ll be fine. You could remove the pump to run and test the motor. Don’t run it without oil in the hydraulic system. Stuff gets dry and hot quick on the hydraulic side!
