The red oak from my recent score has a 32" BHD. What will this yield in cordage? I found a chart online, but it only goes up to 22". Anybody know? Im using all the wood down to 4"
I got 3 +1/4 cord out of one about that size. I think anything bigger than about 6 inches got chipped though. You should get at least that if it was decent tall, had a few big branches and isn't rotten or hollow at the bottom.
Not sure on the amount in the whole tree, but there is 4x more wood in a 32" round than there is in a 16" round
I hate handling those biggun's but they do make a lot of wood. A lot more work, but a lot more wood for sure.
oops blank post, WOW! are you sure on 3+ cords. Was that a guess or an actual stck measure? Im almost done processing it and the mound doesnt look like that much. Tree had some rot/punk on bottom from old lightning strike.
A lot depends on how long the log is before it crowns out. You can roughly estimate the log yield by taking the average diameter, square it, multiply by the length and divide by 128. As in DxDxL/128. By treating the round log as a square you factor in a reasonable estimate of air space in your stack.
Somewhere I have pics of the 3 and 1/3 stacks. I still have 5 or 6 of the crotches to noodle. This is all that's left of the last cord:
Ill average it and figure the volume of the cylinder. I didnt think of the air space though...makes sense. Do you remember the Rustic Oak restaurant in North Haven? Got torn down a couple years ago. Many fond memories of the fire there, the pile of 3' long splits right outside the entrance! I would always bring a log in and they would let me put in on the fire! I always got a table right by the fire!
Agree completely. We all need one of Doug's splitters in our pocket to whip out and take care of the bigguns
cool video. I finished with the red oak today. I have a huge mound of splits a little pile of skinnies and took a truck load of nuggets/shorts, noodle logs (ill cut at home) and the punky ones too. I would bet its close to 3 cord total
