Took down this tree and a dead white ash that were overhanging a driveway. Sorry I don’t have more pics. It was nice dealing with two trees that were 14” DBH instead of 3’+ diameter red oak.

My thinking is it's Tupelo, if it is good luck splitting it.

Hi fellow keystoner . If it's real heavy I'm going with hickory. Pics of a split would help.

ugh I hope it's not gum. I'll have to ask my uncle if he used to get those little spike balls in the driveway.

It seems there are a couple different ID's on this one. My guess was Tupelo,Nyssa sylvatica..Black Tupelo or Black gum. There is also Sweetgum, Liquidambar styraciflua. Curious to see which on it is. Leaves would tell the difference

I'm going to agree with sweet gum also. Around here the bark is usually a little darker, but everything looks like what I've had in the past.

Update: It's sweet gum dang gummit! I attempted to split two rounds. Wood fibers just tore like going through an endless knot. Does sweet gum split any better when it dries out a little? This tree was cut live on Wednesday 3/13. If I don't give it away, I will make a mountain of noodles.

It will split a little better but it also rots fast in rounds so you have to find the sweet spot, othewise it will just crumble.
