Yep a victim of the wind today. I posted the picture pretty fast and I assumed he cut it down. I just realized it was ripped out.
Since I'm the one with the splitter I will probably get half. That was the deal last time and we both had a good time.
I'm going with pin oak on this one. It's still pretty green so minimum 2 years in the stack for this one.
Yup, oak. Is that the tree you posted yesterday? Ive been processing a biog pin oak myself. PITA with all the little branches on the main trunk.
Yep same tree. That was one of the smaller branches I cut to confirm the identification. Love the smell of fresh manure when splitting pin oak.
It does have an unpleasant smell doesnt it?! The one im working on is dead and didnt put leaves out last year. The heartwood is still pretty green. I have a mound of splits and rather pungent!
Im wondering what the cordage yield is on my red oak. I have 3-4 20" logs to split and one larger limb to buck. What is the BHD of your tree? I have an online chart that tells yield at BHD but only goes to 22". Good question for a new thread...here i go!
I'm guess in its about 75 foot tall and maybe 28 inches diameter in the trunk. It's not a huge tree, but there's a lot of smaller branches. We didn't really get into it yet.
https://extension.unh.edu/resources/files/Resource001044_Rep1200.pdf this is a good reference for determining yield. Not sure if i attached it right or not.
