I got a phone call today from the parents of woman I got some nice sugar maple from this past fall. They were nice enough to think of me since they recently had some trees taken in their back yard. However I’m not really sure what type of trees I’m dealing with. It looks like there may be 2 or 3 types of tree here. There was a mix of dead leaves on the ground. I took pic of one, but there was also some small oak leaves around as well; and there may have been others too.

Maybe some elm, red maple (not sure about it being hickory). Any thoughts? They sure would be appreciated. I’m in CT. Thanks.

Top photos are aspen/popple. Last three are red or silver maple.

And a touch of PI in there too.

Definitely looks like poplar, pics 6&7 remind me of elm, but I'm not sure on that.

    Either way, BTU's

Thanks for the response. That’s what I was afraid of. I did spot the poison ivy; I’m very susceptible to it!

Poplar, elm and what appears to be red maple, or possibly silver maple.

after looking carefully at pics again, it looks like a hickory log on the right in the last pic. Has the brown center too. Log will be noticeably heavier. GOOD BTU's in that! Pignut hickory is the variety if im not mistaken

I fully agree with the above, I'd take it all if you've got room. It all has a place in the stacks as far as I'm concerned. Well except the Poison Ivy.

What Karvinkanuck said DO NOT BURN it that is the worst thing you could do. Even if you are immune to it someone near by may not be and that could be deadly.

Thanks for everyone’s input on types of wood. And don’t worry about the PI, I won’t burn it. I’ll pull it off with my gloves and leave it where it came from.

the first one is a poplar leaf, 2nd pic thru 4th are poplar, the 5th is silver maple on the left, and judging by the alternating layers of reddish-brown and creamy white in the bark I'd say american elm. 6th-7th american elm. 8th is silver maple, and an elm on the bottom right. 9th is silver maple, 10th is silver maple with elm on the bottom right.

if it were me I'd get that elm split right away. If you wait 2 months to split it, its really hard to split.

Elm, as well as the rest of it, will be split with the kinetic splitter. It slices right through it and doesn’t leave the gnarly mess the hydraulic splitter leaves with the elm.
