I'm at just under 4.5 cords for this season. I have a few days left in the basement, then I'm going to lean on the oil for the shoulder season. I too sold too much and don't want to dip into next season stacks. The rest still needs more dry time.
All you guys burning 2-3 cord a winter are really making me want to make the switch from the smoke dragon to a more modern stove!
I can't say enough how much of a good investment a modern stove is. If you really want to see how much you can save go with a modern hybrid, with tubes and a cat. And more insulation. Our main attic is super insulated and well vented... The smaller attic, over the sunken family room has very minimal insulation. I think that this is my summer task. After getting the stove cranking I was consistently melting the snow on this roof. Work is never done!
I am guessing we haven't used more than 2.5 cords this year due to trying to dial in a new stove. As previously posted here, I slid off the roof while trying to get up to see if the cap was partially plugged . I was getting a lot of smoke in the house during reloads and I wanted to make sure the new cap wasn't plugged up. I am being forced to wait until the roof is clear of snow and dry before I go up there again. At least I am burning a lot of oil that has been in the tank for a number of years. I may need to add a bit more to the chimney height to prevent back puffing. No, the house is not sealed tight, it actually needs more insulation. Hope to get it dialed in for next winter.
I'm about 2.5ish cords down. I have just about .25 of a cord on the porch now, and the shed is empty. Thankfully, we need to start throttling back on the burning. I need to start grabbing what little is left out in this years stack and start drying that next to the stove if I'm gonna make it to the finish line.
Scotty, I really like your insert, I wish I had that model instead of the voyager. I am at 3 1/2 cords of black locust for the year and have pretty much stopped. 60’s next week. Last year I burned 6 cords as an experiment to see how much it would take to heat 100% with an insert and decided not to repeat that this year. Majority of it was black walnut and silver maple so it’s not quite as crazy as it sounds. I will be converting to a Woodstock in a few years.
Wow, only 2 to 3 cord a year. I'm going thru 5-6 cord a year with a Fisher Insert in a 1800 sqft home and typically only burn when day time highs are less than 50f.
3ish cords here, a half cord low btu stuff, about one and a half red maple, and a cord of oak. Plus a bunch of birch kindling. I'm home a lot, so I can keep feeding the Jotul. It's too small a stove to heat the whole house, so natural gas is secondary heat.
Not sure I've "met" you yet PA Dutch Welcome aboard Hoping to not exceed 3 cord this year. If the weather gets a bit better, I think we'll make it fine. Don't wanna dip into next year's wood. Edit..BTW, like the rabbit collection in your avatar. Makes me hungry.
Hi Chaz. I just joined this week. You might have seen a post in the "Introduce yourself here" thread. I wish I was only burning 3 cord a year. I enjoy rabbit hunting after deer season which leaves now till October to get ready for next heating season.
