Hey all, just wanted to say thanks for the invite to the forum and hello. Looks like a good group of guys here - I hope I can contribute to the group and learn from the vets too. Had some help from my buddy so we wrestled a few small logs out of the back today . We actually got everything in the pic split and stacked also. All of the wood isnt the greatest, but it will burn decent in the wood eating monster in the back ground. Having a tractor is a huge help with the big stuff. Officially sitting at 10 cord cut, split and stacked this year so far. Another 10 cord to go to be 3 years out. Something very satisfying about splitting wood - not really sure what it is, but I know its good for the soul.
Awesome looking set up Sawdog. Those are some fine chunks of wood. Great thing about an OWB is has no prejudice against woof.
Welcome to the forum dog of saws. Nice little setup you have there. How much fuel does your OWB usually eat in a heating season?

Last year was my first year with the OWB. Before that was on propane and a cat wood stove. The stove burned about 2 cord during a normal winter. I have a log home that is fairly well insulated, but I do have a few issues I need to address this summer. If anyone tells you a log home is easy to maintain, they are lying through their teeth. Last year, I think I went through about 10 cord, but really can't tell for sure. I didn't make the decision to get the furnace until late summer. A couple weeks to install the system, poor the concrete, build the shed, etc didn't leave a ton of time to find good wood. I knew the first year I'd be burning wet wood. I have a lumber mill about 2 miles from me and fortunately, my buddy there had a lot of what he calls skins - outside skins of logs created during the milling process. A lot of those bundles have been sitting a round for years - they got me through along with some not so perfectly seasoned ash and Osage. Last winter here was brutal as it was for most I think. Extremely cold temps for long periods of time so Not knowing what I actually went thru and the unusual low temps really have made it difficult to see what my consumption was or will be. I plan on having 10 cord of wood to start with this year (have that already) and another 10 for next year. Will see what that does, but should be close. Trying to get 3 years out as soon as I can.
Yep, its all cedar. The siding, 6x6 and the 3x6 rafters are cedar. They were cut from old telephone poles the county was throwing away! I asked if I could have em...the guy looked at me like I was nuts. My buddy fired up his saw mill and i had all the lumber I needed in a days time....for free. I still smile when I think about it. Will get you a better pic over the weekend.
Nice setup. With some drier wood I think your consumption will go way down over the next few winters.
I'm a little late here, but welcome aboard Sawdog. Where (generally speaking) are you at? Most of us got hit hard this past winter, so yeah, consumption was tough. More pics are always gooder.

Thanks! I was hoping it would. I knew I was going to have to play catch up with dry wood, but I will get there.
I still used the Encore stove in the house this winter because it was so cold. Nothing like a fire in the house - I will always burn both.
Welcome...looks like you have a nice set-up there. A tractor would be a nice thing to have in moving those big logs about.
Welcome Nice set up Speaking of "set up" , the splitter needs "set up " to vertical for those round . Looks like the target gets some use too Bet deer & turkey come by & check out the stacks when you're not around .
