I would not get anything done, it feels like I am the opposite. I only cut and split when there’s snow, ice and negative temps.
Somewhere between 2-2.5 cords. The wood I’m burning now came to me in 2015. Puts me on the four year plan. Once I replace what I burnt I’m good till ‘23.
I'm probably about at 3 cords. Next year will be better, with the improvements we are doing to our house.
Guessin...2 1/4 cords with uglies.....maybe ....just maybe...15 gallons of fuel oil. On cold mornins...gotta get the bathroom a little warm for her when she gets up @ 4am to get ready for work...
It's funny to see how everyones winter has differed. It's very unpredictable here, some years we get very cold for weeks, and then your walking around with a T shirt on... I believe for "most" of the NJ folks it's been reasonably mello. I know here it has, but I say this carefully.. March has kicked our A$$es in the past and I've gone through 1 cord just in March before so I'm treading lightly with that statement. March is usually when we see a good "Nor-Easter" come up the coast and bomb us!
Yes, some of the larger rounds are up over 20% but most of these trees have been down for awhile and most of them where at least partially off the ground which I am sure helps. Not that it would matter, I am not far enough ahead yet to be able to pull seasoned wood from next years stacks, so this is the best and driest wood I have access too. Still have a cord or so of properly seasoned ash, so I have been mixing it with that. Josh
We are about 3 cords right now. Will probably finish the year about 4 cords + a few gallons of HHO. We are 99% wood heat now and we've been heating since October. I gave a pick up load to a buddy a couple weeks ago since his wood was stored on a wood lot that got too muddy to get out of. He actually left his truck in there for 3 weeks till it froze back up after some heavy rain...
I understand rope, I actually did go out and do some splitting when it was 10 below. And you will understand when I say ice is not slippery at 10 below. But getting splitter to start and warm up was 1/2 the job time..
A shade over 1 cord. Mostly in the gulper masonry fireplace upstairs. I'm trusting the Pot Belly dragon less and less.... FINALLY convinced Melissa we need upgrade this summer. She insists on a white stove, I insist on a Pacific Energy, so we landed on a Alderlea T5 Classic (antique white enamel, of course)
I get the splitter thing, I have been keeping mine in the garage for that reason. However I wanted to test it, about two weeks ago, left it outside for some -20*. What I observed was that normal starting procedures was no bueno. What it took to start was full throttle and choke, it started on the 3rd pull. Of course I shut choke off and it died. Restarted, then slowly feathered the choke down from full to no choke over about a minute. I just moved the choke when it started to bog down, so I reduced the choke until it reved more and waited until it bogged, rinse and repeat. I am going to change motor and hydraulic oils over to synthetic on Friday. They rings should be seated at this point to move to AMS oils small engine synthetic, and hydraulic synthetic is Coastal. I have a bunch of birch to split in my day off. I will give a update in the Log Splitter thread that Mr. Dennis -Backwoods has.
Last years total was a little over 5 cord, but we had more sustained teens and single digit days last year. Hope fully spring breaks early and I should finish with a little over 4 cords burnt. Now if I could train Betty. She is under the opinion that "No flames in the box the fire is going out."
patients my friend, patients. are you getting more heat and longer heat cycles along with the less wood usage?
Definitely getting longer cycle times. Should be at 15% to 20% less wood. More heat? Depends on you define heat. We are getting more heat than with the Buck. It seems to be a different heat. More gentle. As far as heat for heat goes my old Rebel would drive you out. The AS hasn't driven us out yet. I am going to put a 3' extension on the chimney this summer and see if that helps.
