I split with mauls , and wedges when needed, for over 45 years. Now I’m a little older, and have about 10 cords from trees we cut down to build a garage. It’s big diameter stuff, with lots of branches - meaning knots - so I bought my first hydraulic splitter. I still use my 1970’s MonsterMaul, but most all of the tough stuff is going to the new splitter.

I worked indoors for the last 38 years, and I have to say I really enjoyed getting outside for a few hours whenever I could to swing that maul. No noise or engine to worry about, and a great time to think about life and wind down. Great exercise and a good appetite for supper too.

That's a certain type of Oregon splitting wedge that I never used. The one I'm talking about is round at the top.Shaped like a cone and made from Aluminum. The cone shaped one works in all woods. However if your splitting big elm get three of them.I purchased four of them off ebay for a good price.Recently I looked them up on ebay. They still have them but the prices went way up.Maybe because it's splitting season ? With the four I purchased from ebay I have a total of five.I think I'm set for life.
