I had hens a few years ago, also a big flock when I was a kid. We had a small wooden box, lined with aluminum foil on the inside. Ran a wire to a lightbulb inside the box, then set the water trough on top so it wouldn’t freeze. It also lit up the coop some, so egg production was pretty good during the winter, as I recall. Maybe the girls just liked to play cards at night, and it kept them happy....not sure.
Be careful to keep them in safe - a weasel can get into a very small space and will do some sad damage.

What's better than germinating some seed and looking up some new plants on a snowy blustery day?

The girls have been in full production for a few weeks now again. Getting about a dozen a day, usually bring 6 doz/wk in to work.
