If you had an unlimited budget, what would our dream log splitter, not processor be? Would you build your own or would you buy a splitter?

There are a few brands out there that are more of a custom build. They don't sell in a box store. And the companies will change features / accessories for you when ordering. So, mine would come down to features.

    :bug::makeitrain":banana::ups:

    So, my dream features list:
    - large hydraulic tank
    - either a larger Honda gas or Kubota diesel power unit
    - fast cycle time
    - auto cycle valve
    - log lift
    - hydraulically height adjustable wedge with changeable heads
    (I.e. 4 way, 6 way, box, etc)
    - large outfield table or maybe even a conveyor

I am not sure if it is allowed to post links or not. So, if needed I can change or delete this. Here are a few of the offerings that make me drool... :jaw:

**disclaimer, clicking the following links may send you down the rabbit hole of the internet....

I'd have a heavy duty one with more power than I'd ever need. Fast cycle time. Log lift, large cradle so you don't have to balance a big one on to split horizontal. Have work tables on the side. And those guys I have seen that have a winch to yard wood to the splitter are cool, let's go with something like that too

I’ve been slowly collecting the stuff to build one. Here’s what I’ve got so far....

Continental F162 4 cylinder engine from an SA200 welder, outrigger cylinder from a grove crane, hydraulic pump from the same crane, will probably buy a control valve but can use valve and tank of the crane if necessary. My calcs put it somewhere around 37 ton without getting stupid on pressure. If I crank it up it’ll go well over 40 tons. I plan to do a plate on the cylinder pushing through a wagon wheel style plate so regardless of log it’s a one pass deal to get the size wood I like in the shop stove.

My current vision is a table and a lift so I can line up the cut logs almost like it’s belt fed. I keep watching for an elevator of some sort to carry the split wood away.

Just gotta get around to it lol. MAYBE it’ll be done this year lol. I’ll be sure and start a thread as I build and may even do videos for YouTube. I have a few ideas for it I haven’t seen used on other setups.

I already have one. The only thing I'd change would be to add electric start. The older I get the more I hate recoil starters. Other than that, this splitter we have is all we've ever wanted or needed. 20 ton MTD with 5 hp B&S engine. Very good on gas and splits all we need as fast as I can work.

I built my splitter I call the "TERMITE" (cause it eats wood). I started with a regular splitter but wanted more. Well, after years of using it and wanting to use the 4X4 running gear it is on for something else, I have been working up a new design. Did document the Termite's build on another forum, I would guess more than 10 years ago. Will document this build of Termite II here this spring. I am definitely building it so I can stand without bending to run it. Still wondering if I want the cylinder vertical so large rounds are easier handled or if I want the cylinder horizontal so the pieces get pushed down a chute. ????????????????

Good and timely post, will be watching to see the replies.

Yep... I was thinking about Kevin in Ohio too, like Chvymn99... if I had a big budget, I'd check with him first, to see if he'd be interested in designing and building another piece of wood splittin art...

Not looking to build any for sale. LOL The "best" splitter will be the one that suits your needs. That is the problem as their are a lot of variables there. Some deal with small easy to split rounds and for that a kinetic would be the best choice in my mind there. If you are dealing with bigger stuff, a remote winch and swing away tables are something I'd HIGHLY recommend.

I like the idea of one like the
Power split, buggy model, with a log lift.

I saw a YouTube video that had a homemade one, similar but it has bigger wider tires, a little taller table, the log lift, and it was red. A guy hauled it out to the woods behind his atv. So fast, efficient, and it just looked so easy.

I wonder how much that thing actually costs?

I'd love to have this splitter. Add the elevator to make even less handling and that's golden.
