We never did get to see what you ordered,no link on that post. All you need is a hunk of gasket,if I remember right, the door has no lip,and the box has no lip.

I ordered the quadafire gasket that was linked by Ivan in like the 3rd reply.

Yes, there's no lip.... It's a soft rubber bicycle tube feeling gasket that is glued to the door.

I'm going to the dealer this afternoon to see what they can suggest. Burning oil like it's 1991 kuwait...

Alright... I ordered the silicone sheet and some 650* rtv to glue it down. I hope I can get it all the way in the back...

Guess i am just confused. You have the trap door cleanout.A flat door, going to a flanged box.The original seal/gasket is/was just a section of hi temp material.(which goes bad, with time).A flat door,no lip.you could put a thread of hi temp sealer there, and would work fine, until next time you need to clean the box.We gave you options, you took the worse one,you did not research it.You should not have to seal it down,as long as you can position it,before snaping the cover shut.I am just being logical.Cut a 5x6,whatever,chunk,slide it in,snap door shut.

It's not that simple. The back is a hinge and doesn't fully disengage making sliding something in gap-prone in the rear corners.

The 1/8th silicone is way too thick. I need 1/32 or something now that I have the part here.

So you're right... that was a stupid choice.

I got a tube of 600* rtv. I'm sealing it shut and calling it a season tonight. I'll buy the full cleanout part that comes with the gasket and have a pro put it in over the summer. Ive spent more in oil at this point anyway.... should have just done this from day one.

Cut some gasket out of the quadrafire part.
Rtved it in. Gooed up the whole outside. Drying for 24 hours to cure. I'll test burn it tomorrow.

Well, the test burn is a failure. With a flashlight I see smoke pouring out the back side. Must've done a crappy seal job being blind back there.

Cooling off and another pass of rtv tomorrow on the back side with a mirror .

Man, you're having bad luck with that clean out gizmo :picard:
Can you remove the works and reseal it on a bench and reinstall?

not easily. the pipe is all rtv'ed in place on both ends and around the 3 to 4" reducer (pipe is 4" stove has a 3" outlet). i put another coat around the thing at lunch time today. a few more hours and i'll try to light it again and watch it.

i have 2 CO meters in the house so that's a safety measure at least. It's easily smoke-sensed when it's leaking with the nose which makes it better. the flashlight in the cove of the fireplace darkness highlights it too

Looking good tonight. No smells. The wife came home from work and I immediately had her fresh nose sniff around. I think it's good.
Until the chute needs cleaning anyway....

    What a pita

Re looking at your pictures, and the pictures I have seen on the net,the hinges are lowered, there would be no reason to"remove" the door,to replace the gasket. The gap,in the pictures,is quite huge, well over 1/8 inch.Any soft hi-med temp gasket would seal that.I researched it more(rare for me),found out people use a "woven" gasket(such as a door gasket) or use a hi temp silicone gasket, the proper thickness.Looking at your pictures, appears you do not know how to apply sealer, and, what is that white prop under the door?Anyway, strange,as there is very little info,on the net, about this "door clean out " problem, which leads me to believe 98% of the stove/insert owners already figured it out.

I've held my tongue for a while now. I don't understand why you're such a condescending azzhole.

You have nothing constructive to add. All you do is say I did it wrong.

Yup. I know I did it wrong. I hacked the heck out of it because no one - not you or I- could find the proper piece. I came here for advice ... got a few ideas but neither were ideal. I did what I could with what I had and the skill I have. It may be less than yours but I'm sure I'm better than you at 1000s of other things.

I'm glad you think everything is easy.

Kindly don't reply to any more of my threads if you have nothing nice to say.
