Had a branch blown off a big sassafras out front so got at it before the ants could. We do have a few big sassafras trees on our land but most don’t make this big.

Our chickens always came running when the splitter fired up. Lots of bugs to clean up. I have an ant problem too. I’ve lost dozens (50?) of big Dogwoods here in the past 20 years. They’re always hollowed out and full of big black ants. I don’t know if the ants are killing them or just get in them once they hollow out. I don’t remember any ants in the few Sassafras that I cut.

Very interesting, we don't have Sassafras around here, I've heard of the name. But I always assumed it was in the deep south, is it a softwood? How does it burn?

Chicken feed i love it. Send them down here, had a huge ash back in Dec that was loaded with carpenter ants. Sometimes i run into the grub larvea under the bark and will leav eit on the deck table for the birds to eat.

Its a hardwood. Smells great, cool shaped leaves (some look like mittens), green twigs, the bark is orange under the skin. Wood is soft, spits a lot.

Love the chickens helping out. Taking breaks from splitting, often there are several birds digging through the debris around the splitter.

Nice work gboutdoors.. :) Looks like a perfect day by you for cutting a little firewood.

I have quite a few Sassafras and a lot of them have insect damage to the heartwood and then the woodpeckers go after them and fill them full of holes.
By the time I cut them there's not a whole lot of good wood left. Yours still look pretty good.
