I've been waiting for the shagbark I grabbed a couple seasons back. Ended up with around a face cord; cut split and stacked. Next winter it should be ready! You're gonna get some nice rounds there.
my first thought is that looks like a nice saw log, some good boards in there. Interesting in that I have seen many here say that leaving wood to rot is wasting it. My buddy with a saw mill is always commenting on guys who "waste" good lumber by cutting up for firewood. I have another friend that does alot of smoking of meats, I give him all the Hickory he wants. He once jokingly told me its a shame I waste all that good Hickory on just keeping my wife warm. Me, I'd rather see a tree if its going to be used that it be used for the most valuable product. Lumber obviously being more valuable than firewood. but I fully understand people turning good lumber into firewood. I'm fortunate that I have a place to go with logs and I get lumber back in return. Plus I'm spoiled that I don't like wrestling bigger stuff anyways. Just a comment that came into my head after seeing the tree in your picture. Happy sawing and splitting, I burn probably 60-80% Shagbark Hickory myself. It'll keep you warm on the coldest winter nights for sure.
Well my little 14" poalan chainsaw has met it's match I couldn't get this hickory bucked up today it jus to tough for that little saw. Gonna borrow a friend's bigger saw Saturday and go back for it.
