Another way to look at it is, you're only adding .20cents to the cost of each bag. Seems pretty insignificant, really.

So I can get Crabbe's a Canadian Softwood for $264 a ton plus delivery. I think I tried a few bags a couple of years ago but can not recall. Anyone have experience with them? Been burning Cubex for cold season but those are going for $290 a ton on special right now. Was wondering how the Crabbe's compare and if you would buy them at that price? (I know every stove is different try before I buy).

Unfortunately the good pellets are $60 or more per ton over the box store stuff. Which sometimes is pretty good pellets. Thats about a $360-$400 savings for me.

Very true. My bad. I intended to compare the cost of buying pellets in pre-buy vs waiting till later hoping the price fell. I only have box stores to choose from, so I don't have that conundrum. On the other hand, my only choices were what the box stores stocked. Rural King had Easy Heats all year, and Lowes ran out in February. Fortunately, I was pellet pigged to the rafters and didn't have any issues. If I hadn't been, I would have been burning $4 propane...

Yeah, my spring special versus regular pricing is about the same difference.

Propane is $4 a gallon in Ohio? Some of my friends are switching to it and trying to talk me into it. I think they're paying in the $2.20 to $2.40 range. Less than $3.00 anyway.

Propane at 2.20 is like paying 3.30 for oil.
1.5 gallons of propane equals 1 gallon of oil IIRC.

Not normally. I normally pay around $2 a gallon. But, we had a pellet shortage and a propane shortage in Ohio this winter, and those occurred at the same time. Fortunately I had plenty of pellets, but I heard about plenty of people that couldn't get pellets and had to pay $4 per gallon to get propane to stay warm. I also heard about plenty of people that ran out of propane. If I run out of pellets, that's my fault for not planning ahead, but I'd be pretty steamed if my propane company didn't keep the tank full.

Why in the world would you switch to propane? I cut my heating bill by at least 50% switching over to pellets, and I keep the house warmer too.

I wouldn't. But my furnace died and I have no backup. I need to install something and they were pushing propane.

Gotcha. Good luck with the decision. You'll need some sort of backup, especially in Maine. You had me worried you were dumping pellets for propane. If you don't mind the tank and the rental issues, etc, it's a good backup.

Did you ever get any response on the Crabbe pellets? I can get them at 269 but have no experience with them.
