7 feels like 3, 76 inside on coals. Today is the calm before the storm, supposed to reach 20ish with snow starting around sunset. 6-10” coming with sleet and freezing rain after daybreak tomorrow, then going back to snow. Another effing mess to clean up. I’m sure schools will be cancelled again tomorrow. Then they’re talking rain later in the week. Is this really February or did I sleep into March? Meanwhile Caribou has 116” so far this season with 10-14” more coming for them. No lack of sledding snow this winter in The County.
Current temp -11°F heading up to 24°F with up to a foot of snow expected through tomorrow morning. Burning birch
18° here, snow expected by about 2P. Will get 6" maybe before the changeover to sleet at midnight. All done by 6A, with temps up to the 40's, so tomorrow will be a sloppy cleanup. I'm really hoping it all melts by this weekend, so I can get back to my oak scrounge. Oh yeah, burning red maple and oak.
That’s kind of my plan. Been looking forward to it. There’s a lot of hands I’m looking forward to shaking. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
34 here, ash in the stove. We had a lot of ice last night. Nasty drive into work. Melting now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A fella could get used to all the mild temps, another nice day in store for us. Up to 8.5 hours of daylight up from 5.5 hours on solstice.
Get ready for round 2, Dennis Backwoods Savage . Looks like the tail end that's over in Wisconsin might whip up into lower Mi and cross right over you before hitting us. On the other hand, maybe it'll lose steam over the lake. What's on top of us is doing a bit of a swirl pattern, but generally going NNE. Just got done rakin' the N and S roofs (most of it from the last little dump). We've gotten a little over an inch out of this one....... so far.
That's very true about some ice being less than it should be. I posted about what I call rotten ice (generic term for crappy ice and not sure why!) in my hunting post from deer season a few years ago. I hunted the same exact spot this year and the ice was fine, but that year, a normal cold year, 4 weeks after the sloughs/low area swampy areas froze it was really dodgy. Nothing worse than dragging a deer across a frozen slough that's 1-8 feet deep and you see slush and your boots start going through.
We use the term rotten ice as well. Any number of things can cause ice to rot, nothing worse than rotten ice when it should be hard. it is scary when it mush's, and is like standing on an Icee. I don't like candling either. I always get nervous when the ice level is to the headlights of the snow machine.
Looks like most of the wrap around will happen in Wisconsin and the UP. They've cut our forecast way back for tonight to basically nothing more than the wind. It has warmed up enough now too so that the snow is getting sticky. Just finished up with the shoving around. Glad I did not wait to shove it around. I see we are predicted for a short thaw Thursday so let us hope for a big thaw. Would really be nice to get rid of the ice that is now under the snow.
We have had about 14" of snow in several events over the past week and a half. Temps got into the teens a night or two. Last afternoon and early night it snowed like all get out than turned to rain. Branches were breaking off the trees every 10 min or so. One hit the house and ripped about six feet of gutter off. No structural damage thank heavens! When things settle down we will have to have the entire 40' run replaced as it is continuous gutter. Also had a double pane window fail in the intense (for here) cold. Lifetime guarantee so no problem there! They just come out and replace it. The aftermath of a heavy snow is a mess! Temps overnight were 34*-36*F so we are backing off on the burning. Medium fire of Fir and Deodar right now. Lots of limb cleanup to do but will probably use the 260 Stihl instead of the 362. Still have not had a chance to use the larger saw!
