Not sure why I am just joining here. I apologize. I have seen many familiar names from OPE forum.

My name is Matt and I have a firewood problem. Lol

I’m new to the club and like it so far. It is no where near as pretentious or contentious as the bonsai forums and also great content.
I recently started stopping at a community firewood drop off location, real close to work. It’s not exactly prime pickings, but I have a fisgara splitter that makes short work of some of the buggier selections, and a hammer for the rounds with more integrity. There are a few rounds I dragged back that the axe is just bouncing off of. Should I leave them in the rain to soften over time? Or would drying them out help them split easier?

    A few questions:

    What is a “cat stove”?

What do you call wafer thin rounds? Looks like someone had some fun with the chain saw on some pine or spruce. They are sticky, but I also figured with some seasoning, I have free fire starters for quite a while.

:BrianK:A EPA approved stove with a ceramic or steel catalyst, cataletic converter, that, when reaching operating temperature, reburns the smoke to produce heat. They are known for their long, 12+ hour per load, burn times.

    mrfancyplants, welcome to the club!

Thin cut "wafers" of wood are referred to as cookies to us woodcutting crazies.

And a "cat" stove is a stove outfitted with a catalytic converter, which once at a higher temperature helps burn up the smoke vapours. The other modern stoves have what's referred to as secondary burn technology, which is additional air introduced into the top of the firebox to help reignite the smoke vapours.

    We call those "secondaries".

Enjoy the forums, glad to have you with us!

Hey! It's a beautiful Saturday morning here, why are so many folks pounding away on the forum rather than being outside pounding out firewood??

Had a long week, slept in, and it's still 15 OAT.
Also a bit too much snow on top of and around the logs. Besides, I have a couple more cups of coffee to drink, and not much else happens until I do. :D
There's a new B&C that needs to go on the saw that I want to test, so I'll be out there cutting ASAP......just prolly not for a few days.

mrfancyplants you definitely want to dry the wood. Green wood doesn't split as easily as wood that has had some some to dry and check (cracks on end of rounds)

Once your wood is split, it's time to let it sit and continue to dry out, known as seasoning

    Here's what I do:
Cut a groove about an inch deep in the top of the round. IMG_20190322_29766.jpg
Get a wedge or two started in the groove, and bang away with your sledge!
    IMG_20190104_4946.jpg IMG_20190104_57580.jpg
(The first pic is oak. The second and third are black locust, and didn't need a starter groove cut.)
