This project has been on the burner since we started the process of buying the land next door. I don't know if it is the same for every one but in this area of Michigan it is like pulling teeth from a chicken to get a estmate on a survey. Just a simple base survey down one side of the new property. Take the property discription in to their office and we are told they are 5 to 6 weeks behind. leave the discription and return in a week and they can't find the discription. Even though they have probably did thousands they can not give us a ruff estimate on how much to find a south line and stake that line every 200 feet for 1330 feet. Tell us to bring in another property discription. I tell Kare screw them, there are more surveyers in the area, these people wre recommended by my realtor brother in law. We drive to a town south of us and tell the lady at the front desk we want a estimate to survey our propertys south boundry. The owner a fellow in his late 70's early 80's yells down the hall and tells us to come on back. He looked at our property discription, pulls out a plat book and points to the property with AC and says that is you? The other chunk with FU (Fred Upton) is this property correct. He tells us they are back logged till Thanks giving time and gave us a price to not only stake the south line of the new property but the north line of the old property. Thanks giving came and went and no survey done. Kare is impatient calls the first week of December, Lady she talked to said next week. Next week came and went Christmas also came and went New years came and went. I planed on going down and talking to the old fellow after new years then I got sick, laid up for nearly 3 weeks. While I was still laid up I look out the living room window along the creek to see a white pick up with a flashing amber truck near the road bridge over the creek. I tell Kare I think the surveyers are out there working. She goes to town for a few things and comes back home and in the house and says they are out by the mail box. Did I know the mail box was not on our property? I tell her yes I knew that is where the county put it to make it safer for the mail man. She goes out to do the dogs that evening and cames back in and says they have only did our orginal south line nothing on the new property. I call the next day and talk to the old fellow and explain what they did was wrong. this was Thursday. He tells me It will be fixed before the end of the week. Kare came in from taking car of the dogs and says they pulled all the stakes they had did yesterday all but one. They staked out the correct south line, happy to hear that. I cut a 6 inch block of wood Monday feeling a whole lot better and grab some T post loaded on thre Bota. I set a 6 inch block againest the survey stake and drive a T post Deep. Tuesday I load up a bunch of tee post and we started doing the work in the mornings as I didn't want to over do and get sick again. Neighbours board horse pasture fence is at least 8 inches over on our place in our south east corner. The neighbours sent a over seer to make sure we were doing it right. Great help measuring how far apart I put the post, how deer to pound them in and winding in the line to move to thre next section. The line Yup that is a level so she can make sure I have to post plumb. Nice and straight. Winding in the string and how did you get that one out of line? This is where we are getting to where they are over our line. Al
Over seers discussing if we are doing things right. This is as far as I had cleared of the thick brush stuff. Post finished to the end of what I had cleared. Just got it cleared when the cold snap hit then some snow and the polar vortex. Al
Gets narrow from here on. This wood fence post I suppose is ours now? I don't know just how I am going to deal with the horse farm people a older woman and her daughter no men. When I was doing some clearing before for the survey she came out and told me to take down all the Autum olives if I wanted as they stink in the spring. Then two weeks after I quit the clearing a cop comes and knocks on my door Says she is complaining I had cleared to far south on her property. Seems they have a survey stake for their south line and measured it with a 100' tape to find I was to far south. I tell the cop she had told me to take down all of thre autum olive and every thing I had taken down would grow back come summer. I told him we had a survey crew coming and I would adjust according to their stakes . I was off in that area by about 15 feet. So once it thaws so I can dig post holes for the corner post we will be back at it and string up our woven wire fenceing. Also giving some thought to useing a Wedge Lock system instead of wood post. I could finish the fence before the ground thawed. Al
No we are not going to run any animals. No pigs, cows, sheep, goats, horses. Just mark our property so you would really have to be stupid to not know your tresspassing. It will also keep the horse proples dog from coming on our place and chaseing deer. It will also keep my dogs from trying to go under their board fence and upsetting their horses. Al
Nice pics, good to keep a record. It looks like a lot of work, but no doubt it will have been worth doing in the long run. Your heirs/next property owners will certainly benefit.
The fence will be just pass the power pole. There is a trail that goes from the road to the back of the place. The drive way I put in so we could exitnd enter our home drive at the crest of the hill. The county made me take it out. The north line of the property and trail I made back to get sand for the driveway. Al
