So I am soliciting advice on another thread on whether or not to insulate by 30+ feet of liner running through a exterior masonry chimney. The advantage of insulating is less creosote, the disadvantage would be over-drafting. In the event I decide to insulate, I wanted to learn more about dampers. I am going to try to use the rear exit, and put a tee pipe with clean out in. Is this the best place to put the damper? Can I add a damper later? Without buying a new tee pipe? Do the tee pipes come with dampers, or is this something to add to a tee pipe? Are there other types of dampers than barometric? Manual? What is the best type to get? I like uncomplicated things, how complicated/reliable are the barometric dampers?
I would not put in a barometric damper for sure! And are you sure you even need a damper? I've seen lots of 30' chimneys that work just fine with today's stoves and no damper.
Ok, thanks. We are going to leave out the damper for now. Now if I can just decide on the insulated liner...
