I'm not much for buying wood but a localsaw mill has bundles of oak/maple for sale 8' long anywhere from a little bit of slab up to chunks bigger square than a railroad tie some maybe twice the size. A lot of the bundle consist of 6x6s. No bark at all some of the wood has hollow spots from ants and stuff and may be a little punky from the ants I did cut and stack the 1 bundle I bought and split the bigger stuff ended up with just over 1/2 a cord. I only have to drive 1 mile to get it and 1 mile back and they drop it in my trailer with a lift. They sell for $25.00 do you guys think this is a good price or to pricey?

Probably not to bad of a deal for half a cord of wood when you think of the gas and time savings.

I'd be back & get more & more & more.
Should season well , no bark is a + , IMO, less mess.
$50 per cord is a good price for oak.
Hard to go cut wood for less than that & from the sizes I see, it's
pretty good size. Better than slab wood IMO !

    Good Deal ? YES

What does a cord of fire wood sell for in your area ?

I bought some slab wood and it was a good deal I thought. Good way to get a lot of wood for a good price. I messed up by stacking a lot of it with the flat sides against each other and didn't give it enough room to let the air get to it.

If it's close by, that sounds like a nice deal to me.

You can't go wrong at that price and it's only 1 mile away. I'd probably be they're favorite customer if I were you. At that price you could get 4x that if you resold it.

If I could get slab wood like that for $50 one mile from my house I'd be busy for the next 2 months of weekends. The stuff here is the same amount for $50 but its a lot thinner, not bad if you're in a pinch but the place is 30 miles from my house so I haven't bought any.

At $50/cord I'd fill up the yard with as much I could afford & make room for.

Costs me roughly 80/cord to cut snags, clean up deadfall & do other cutting on parent's acreage 1 hour west of me.Counting gas, equipment wear/maintenance etc.But its better than any gym membership & worth that just to walk in the woods even when I'm not cutting that day.

I guesstimate that it costs me $20 a cord to process the wood I cut off my land, so $50 sounds great!

Sounds like a good deal. Two miles round trip is minimal mileage. The running price for log loads seems to be up to twice that depending on where you live. Unless you can find a tree service who will give you wood I don't think you can beat it. The only shortcoming is as swags pointed out, you need to be careful stacking it to keep the cut sides apart. But that is the same with noodled wood also.

Swags is a member here that pointed out the importance of keeping the cut side apart. He was talking about real slab wood which is the slices they take off the outsides of a log to get down to a square piece to saw boards from. So in esence they are flat like a board and if you stack them flat together it would be like stacking lumber together and the board stays damp because of no air.

That is a great deal you have there....get as much as you can.
