This big hickory was blocking one of my tractor roads. Think it's bitternut since that and shagbark is all I ever see regarding hickory. Took down a small 6" or so shagbark with it. An overall great day for some cutting.
The little tree is shagbark hickory. As for the larger one I'm not sure, Ash or Basswood? Look at the buds on the branches if they are yellow they are bitternut hickory. It doesn't look like bitternut hickory to me.
At least the top wasn't right on the trail. I don't mind when a tree sacrifices itself to the firewood Gods by falling across a trail...unless the crown lands on the trail. Such a mess.
A fun project and a beautiful location. Working there would make me glad to be alive that day and in that spot!
Great wood. Not ash for sure, I think you are correct with bitternut. I've only cut one bitternut and that was 5 years back. Matter of fact some of it is in the stove right now. No bark left on it so I can't compare with your pictures. Beautiful country. We bicycle a good bit down in the Tellico Plains area and just love it.
That thar hollar looks a bit familiar. I fair from the east side of the state myself but reside in Alabama now. Nice lookin country. Hickory's grow a might big in Tennessee.
Thanks guys. Log dog I'm in middle TN, about an hour east of Nashville. Just far enough to be out of the vicinity of the population boom.
Beautiful country. I used to work in Cookeville for a while. You guys had a bad ice storm several years ago and I remember seeing big trees down. Lots of BTUs for the taking. You live in a slice of heaven!!! I have been surrounded by subdivisions and would love to move out but work is a convenient drive for both of us. .
