Welcome to the club Geoffrey Offenheiser I wont speculate on the wood but if Backwoods Savage says white oak you can pretty much bet on it. If you hang around here you'll come to find he kinda knows what he's talking about. He's forgotten more about wood and wood burning than I'll ever learn
Good morning and welcome to FHC Geoffrey Offenheiser Turn that round you’ve sawn upright and take a picture of the entire end grain? Bark pics alone aren’t the easiest to ID a tree by in most cases.
Welcome to the club. Lots of good folks around here willing to share wisdom and humor. I'll second Backwoods Savage on white oak. There are several species that fall under the white oak family. A lot of them will get a reddish or pink tint when first cut and exposed to air. This is a 42-44" white oak that had been blown down about 2-3 years.
Thanks for the replies guys. Glad to have found this club. I was having a hard time between red maple and oak. Its probably been blown over for years. The wood is not super dense and heavy but is also very dry
I'd like to see the end grain, or a split. Sure looks like silver maple or possibly a large red maple to me. Oh, and welcome to the club, Geoffrey Offenheiser !
I was thinking Silver maple too.... especially since he mentioned that it wasn’t super dense or heavy...
My eye first saw silver maple. White oak always throws me off because I've never actually aquired any of it.
