It was already down but still had some dead leaves.

It looks like the pieces that were previously cut and dried were yellowish if that helps

My first look I thought black walnut, but leaves don't seem to match.

    What species of walnut?

That’s what I thought at first.... but the leaves on a walnut are pinnate leaves with leaflets... IMHO those leaves look more like some kind of elm...

I kinda think Elm as well. Looks a lot like an Elm I took out of a fence row today. Not sure what type, Chinese maybe?

That second picture looks like black locust but the rest do not. The other ones, maybe slippery elm.

Elm, maybe red, aka, slippery elm. Not for sure but the leaves look like elm.

At first glance I was thinking 2 different trees, walnut and black locust. You sure this ain't a secret test?

3EDA780C-4881-4600-BD7F-5680CAD8FF41.jpeg Lol, it was hard to tell but I thought it was all one tree branching out several ways from the stump. I didn’t pay much attention to the stump since the property owner already had all of the tree on the ground.

Pretty sure you have 2 trees there. The stump on the far right in your second posting is (second picture, first post) black locust and the other stumps are red, aka, slippery elm.

I also think there are two trees in this mystery. Black locust stump and some kind of elm for the leaves.

Elm leaves turn to dust in the fall. Those are some sort of oak leaves. The wood is black walnut and black locust.

It just doesn't look like black walnut bark that I'm used to seeing.

Update: after further searching you are probably correct with black walnut. The picture is of a younger tree and the bark has not developed into the nature bark I'm used to seeing. Pictures of immature black walnut trees have a bark pattern like those in the picture. My :tip:to you!

Red elm has a ring of white sapwood with a brown to red heartwood too so life through cellphone pictures can be confusing sometimes.

I see what you are saying about some of the leaves. In one picture they look as though they could be shingle oak leaves and the visible lobes are not right for red elm. Later when I take a walk I'll check the shingle oak leaves on and around the one on my place.

    Good spot! :salute:

How sure are you that those leaves came off that tree? The way the leaves are distinctly toothed and the ends of the teeth has that bristle, they look like chestnut leaves to me. American Chestnut is about all gone but some small ones grow from root sprouts. Could be Chinese Chestnut maybe?

The leaves were on the branches still on the tree. My wife said she saw 3 sharp round “fruits” under the downed tree similar to the picture I posted (sorry I didn’t know how to get the picture to go below the text). But we didn’t know if it was from that tree.

I was doing the cutting and she was loading my trailer so I didn’t notice any of the sharp fruit balls

American Chestnut?!? o_O I've never seen one but the description seems to fit; once a tree reaching 100' now mostly found as stump sprouts under 20' in height.

A friend of mine in W.V. has a large Chinese chestnut in his yard and the fruit looks almost the same and the leaves are very similar to those in your picture.

I stand humbled and better educated. :emb:
