Got out this morning to cut two more dead standing oaks. Hung the first one up ended up getting it down ok but took longer that I had hoped so stopped at one for the day. Started cutting from the bottom. About half way down. All set now just cut it up and load it. First load out. Ready to split and stack.
Nice job! It’s worth the effort and comes with it own challenges. I’ve learned to notch top of the log where the first cut is the angle cut, the second is perpendicular to the tree to make the notch and back cut is the top of the bar on the bottom of the log and runs into the second cut. Eliminates a barber chair and leaves atleast one end square to the log.
Yep hanging one up happens sometimes. I know I have done it. I always carry wire rope to pull them out. Some nice looking wood.
Similar thing today, but it was a tall oak only about 9 inches at the lower end. Top was snagged against the top of a young maple. Slowly cut the maple until they both came down together. That stuff can be scary.
Safely down and came out of the woods with all your bits attached... I’d call that a win. Looks like the weather definitely cooperated.
All split a stacked by dinner last night. Almost done with this stack one more to go to get me back to 4 years on the ground.
Cutting inside the woods means you'll have hangers. It is different cutting firewood than it is for logging because they can plan it out how they will drop several trees whereas we are usually working on one or two most of the time anyway.
I recently made a trip to SW Mississippi and really learned how thick a woods can be! It is amazing in January but then I was trying to imagine what it would be like in mid summer with all the green mixed in. Wow! No wonder folks down there like to use dogs for hunting. I can see where they are needed in many areas.
