Thanks WW. It appears your likes are very similar to ours.

One thing that I found out through looking at reviews (but now I have to look again as I didn't write it down last night) is that one of the vacuum's is not height adjustable. A video was given showing different floors and it was amazing how much drag for some carpets. Not sure I like that.

We had an Oreck...until yesterday when things began breaking. On top of that there are not many service centers near us as most of them closed. So, we'll write that model off.

I had a Dyson for less than 3 months for that very reason. The throw rugs in my entry and kitchen and den are textured, some of it's dense/thick and tall, the Dyson was impossible to push across them, I had to drag the vac backwards strip by strip. Also though, it seemed a bit heavier pushing around and I did not like the accessory hose. It was super stiff and I had to fight it to stretch it out, then it was a pita to put back into where it's stored in the handle.

I would stay away from bagless. I have a shark navigator and it works fine, but it is a ridiculous mess when you have to empty it. These bagless vacuums have all sorts of filters, but guess what happens when you need to empty them. All that dust just ends up in the air anyway. Emptying it outside isn’t always convenient either and it is still all around your face and body making a mess. I believe these bagless vacuums are the biggest scam going. Just my opinion.

On a Kirby, at least ours the vacuum is self propelled. When you push the handle forward the vacs transmission drives it away and when you pull back it drives in reverse. It also fills the bag from the top so the stuff settles down and doesn't get churned up.

Hey Dennis, did you find anything and does Judy like it?

Mine is still doing a good job despite all the stuff I pick up with it.

I got the Dyson V8 Animal over Christmas when Costco had it $100 off. I replaced an Oreck, which gave several good years of service.

I like the Dyson because it is cordless and bagless. The battery technology has improved so much- it’s a full 40 minutes before needing a recharge; and emptying the canister is not hard and no mess. You put the canister over the trash can and pull the red lever. Dirt in the trash, and push the lever back down and you’re good to go again. Not having a cord to deal with is a huge plus. Overall I’m really happy with it; and most importantly the wife LOVES it. She said it was the best Christmas present ever.

Backwoods Savage, it also comes with a 2 year warranty where Dyson pays the shipping, if something isn’t functioning right. Something else to think about-

*The above review is mine, I’m just happy with my vacuum. I don’t work for Dyson.*

wildwest we did get one. We thought long and hard on the Dyson but ended up with a Shark (hope it doesn't bite) NV 352. So far, so good.

Another Shark owner here! We've had ours for years..... at least 6+ years. Very happy with it, we had a small issue with it one time which turned out to be our mistake not cleaning it properly and they still sent us out a whole new upright piece to it which was like basically getting a brand new vacuum. As long as you keep it clean and clear that thing runs like a champ and has excellent suction at half the cost of more expensive brands.

Best of luck with your new Shark Backwoods Savage

    Hi Dennis
We have the shark lift away. We did have a dyson for a long time. The dyson is a fantastic machine, but too heavy. The lift away we have will convert to a canister vac if we want. We have another shark that has the canister in the handle. Both have their place. I take the filters out of our lift away and wash them when I feel the need. The rest of the machine cleans up easily. Mush of the machine comes apart easily for access to fix plugs. Wife all too often vacuums up thing that she shouldn't, like socks, string etc. The company has good customer service and wants to keep you happy. We only have one small area carpet, the rest of the floors are all ceramic tile. only thing I dislike is the cord. Would prefer one with the rechargeable lithium battery. For what time we use it, the battery will last long enough.

We have found that although they say it won't pick up string or hair, it does. Also my wife has been washing it each time when finished.

Have had a Dyson Animal for years, it was great for the first couple years but not so good anymore. I've replaced nearly the whole vacuum with parts at this point. Having said that, it's probably 14-15 years old at this point and overdue for replacement.

My daughter is home from college and has a Shark Navigator, probably one of the cheapest ones, and it does a far better job of picking up everything than the Dyson. We will probably get a new Shark. The other option we considered was a Miele canister vac, but they are just too expensive.

It is the case that gathers the dust. Also the filters.

I see. My previous neighbor that cleaned for me and other people uses an NAV 351 for years. She had an extra set of filters, always a clean dry set when she needed to change them out, dirty set was washed and set out to dry and ready for next month or so depending on how much she used her NAV (which was a lot as it was doing a couple houses a week).

Here my shark was used to pick up stray ash from both stoves, not to mention it's dusty here, I had to change those more often. Idk, my dirt cups have dust stuck to the sides after emptying it, I don't notice after I put the vac away in the closet... I totally understand if your wife likes to see the canister clean like a window, just wanted to mention it might not need as much time as it sounds like she's spending on it.

Reminds me of a funny story. When I was 13 my evil stepmother moved into our house. She had this vacuum cleaner that evidently made gold and was very partial to it. One day I took the ashes out of the stove downstairs and some coals rolled out onto the ash tray. Here she comes cleaning up behind me. Sucked up a heap of red coals. The coals got in the bag, lit the hair and wood splinters and up she went. The air really stoked the fire and lit up the plastic housing nicely. She ran around in circles screaming as it melted to the ground. When I ran downstairs to see the disaster I unplugged it and flung it out in the yard. It didn’t work after that. Insert pic of her riding a broom.

  I did that with my (new at the time) shop vac cleaning the pellet stove :emb: At first I thought the lid was not fitted and throwing ash, nope, it was the bag igniting  Same one, leaned the hose against a space heater and melted it (see duct tape below LOL). Darn thing still works great despite all that though :)

My youngest daughter is a neat freak, we got a shark and remarked that we had vacummed with the old and the new shark pulled so much into its container. She thought hers was doing so well, took our shark over to her house, ran a couple swipes across her carpet and she went out that night and bought herself a shark! We are a shark family, bought a smaller lighter manueverable one for my mom on her hardwoods floors.

This vacuum is pretty much kerplunk only 4 years later. Idk, we both hate the canister anyway. I found one that meets most our needs except one.
    Upright
    Bagged
    Auto-height
    Brush beater off option
    Onboard tools

Missing is a 12 amp motor. Somehow none of the 12A have the above options and the ones that do offer above are all 10 amp.

In my dreams an upright quiet shopvac could handle living out here lol.
