I'm afraid it does cost an arm and a leg, but I've had a Rainbow since 1988. It was $900 back then but I've been using it for 30 years now.

One more vote for the shark navigator! I think I’m going on 6 years with mine. With young kids and two dogs it gets used daily. I did recently replace the hose on it, it had a number of cracks in it, probably from over stretching. I also replace the two filters in it every year.

Not quite sure how to answer. Nothing compared to the sound of a shop vac but we have to raise our voices to talk while vacuuming.

If you'd like, many vacuums have decibels listed. You and Judy narrow down to some models and I can look them up and list them for you?

Things that matter for me and whoever vacuums in your house might consider:

    • Total weight regardless of style (for instance the Rocket is only 7 lbs, but holding that up over the whole floor was difficult for me, though the lady that cleaned for me a couple years loved it, opposed to I don't mind pushing around an almost 20lb upright vacuum. And have no patience for dragging around the canister floor style like the electrolux we all used).
    • Upright vs drag around floor vac
    • Bagged vac vs canister collection
    • Corded or cordless (I did NOT care for the cordless)
    • Length of cord if corded
    • FLOOR HEIGHT mechanism. I bought an upright in the early 90's with "automatic height adjustment", I could go from our tiled foyer to the living room carpet to the pergo in the kitchen and not have to turn a dial on the head
    • Brush roller/beater on or off button. I only turn mine off if going over sand etc. so it does not throw around on laminate and tile
    • ATTACHMENTS onboard is must for me. If I vac the room and when I get over to the wood/pellet stove and see ashes in the corner I want to be able to unhook the suction hose, attach the crevice tool and get that corner, not go back later and with the correct hose/tool or stop and go bring them to where I am.
    • I like the ball steering on the new vacuums, I can actually steer it with my left arm/hand to give my right a rest when it's worn out
Another thought is Oreck is still in business. They are pricey but they still have bagged ones that are pretty quiet.

About ten years ago we won a Dyson. It SUCKS!...Literally! That thing will pick up dirt you can't see! It was made for pet owners.
I don't know what they cost, but I would definitely buy another.

We have this one....we're dirty around here....dog....kids...me tracking in sawdust from the shop and cutting firewood. The first time we vacuumed with it, it picked up a TON of stuff the old one left behind. Super quiet too.

2 things that are difficult to trust reviews.
    Vacuums and fans.
They suck qnd they blow, each have 2 meanings.
So when a vacuum sucks, does that mean its good or bad?
    I get sooooo confused....:faint::rofl: :lol:

We have a couple of Kirby's both over 25 years old. No problems just the occasional beater belt.

I had a Dyson for several years, Really good machine. Very noisy. Then bought a Shark lift away. Really like this one. I broke the hose handle, they replaced it for free. Important to keep the filters clean.
