Oh yeah. The one here was either turned into a K-Mart or had been a K-mart before it was a Builders Square. I forget the order of progression now. They were here long before Home Depot or Lowes. The building is a Stop and Shop now and may not be the exact same building even though it is in the same place.

Go to lowes for curtains, go to HD for building supplies.. though not the best building supplies.

Its 45min for me to either of those. There is a family owned Truevalue in town, but its anything but a value! Their lumber is all #1’s though. I go here because its convenient, but if I need lots of things I make the drive as the savings more than pay the gas.

I also have an 84 Lumber about 20min away but never have onced stopped in there.

The only thing Lowes wins for is the restroom placement hahahaha always in the front and very clean hahahahahaha

Not always, but most stores. I used to be able to walk in the front door and be able to navigate myself to wherever I needed to go based on the register layout.

They have about 4 different layouts that they typically follow.

I'll never understand why the family bathrooms are always in the outdoor garden area though. Always a nice quiet place to go do your business in the winter though. Just gotta pull the door open.

Its a simple business decision from the top yucks throwing darts at a board.
They basically look at sales returns in these areas and have a minimum % return or they walk away - granted they likely got some nice tax incentives from the local municipality prior to development. those may be expiring as well. Leaves the community with a gigantic warehouse retail space that will remain vacant because the cities think its still retail viable, or a rotating slew of tenants with no credible plan.

Maybe there'll be a few bargains before they lock the doors.

Handy Andy was another one from back in that era. I only remember one of those on Plainfield Ave in Grand Rapids in the early 90s.

I gave up buying box store lumber or drywall years ago unless I only needed a board or two. The only store that had a drive through lumberyard in my (former) home area was Menards. It was hit and miss. Some was OK, some you could build a canoe out of it was so warped.

At HD and Lowe’s, it was too much of a pain to put the stuff on a cart, push it through the store, load it in the parking lot, unload at home. It was worse than handling firewood.

I bought a lot of lumber and drywall this summer after I moved up north. The local lumberyard was about 50 cents a sheet more for drywall and a dime or so more per 2x4 than HD/Lowe’s. Better lumber, closer to home, and getting help loading was worth every penny.

I worked 8 years for lowes and the way they do crap is a wonder they still around. The top brass seem to often also be Hd rejects. When working there if Hd did something Lowes did it 6 months later even if by then Hd figured out it was wrong. Worst thing in a long time which they did was company wide get rid of all department managers left no one who knew much or cared about each department in the store.I hear they now after close to 2 year they thinking of once again put department managers in place .They saved enough money for the Big guys to get there bonus and to keep the share holders happy for a short while.

You sound like someone who works at a family owned lumber yard.

If my nearest Lowe's closes, at least I won't have to hear my neighbor talk about shopping at LOWELL'S anymore.

I recently bought some land that happened to have an old house on it. My primary interest is in the land and building a future house, but I thought, what the hell... I'll fix the little issues with the house and make it rentable and if I build a house later I can use that one as a guest house.

One thing it needs is windows, 18 to be exact. I have no time or patience to replace them myself and Lowe's gives free estimates. They come out, tell them i just want contractor grade...over 10k... Sorry, but I'll look elsewhere.

The flooring in the kitchen needs to be replaced. I can do it, but I thought why not see what it would cost through Lowes since that's where I'll be buying the supplies. They don't give free estimates on flooring replacement...no big deal. The guy (nice older sounding guy) tells me to measure it, bring the measurements up there with a few pictures to give them an idea of the work involved, and they will give me a semi accurate estimate. I measure everything carefully and even drew up a map and took pictures as he requested.

So I go to Lowe's before bowling night, go to the flooring area, nobody around. Bowling starts in an hour, but it's right across the street. I wait for 20 minutes before finally a man bun millenial (I'm technically a millennial unfortunately) shows up and I tell him I called about an estimate and have the measurements and pictures. He cuts me off before I can tell him it's a rental and what I'm wanting (linoleum) and says its $5.99-$7.99 per square foot for tile....before I ever show him anything. So I pull out my measurements, calculate the square footage while he stands there, calculate the price, and come up with about $1080 erring on the high side. I ask if he wants to see what the kitchen looks like so he knows what prep work or extras need to be done...he says no and repeats the pricing. I ask if this includes tile. He says no. I tell him for that price if it doesn't include tile (assuming it would have been the $0.49 per square foot cheap stuff they were advertising) I don't want tile, I just want some cheap linoleum. He says, Ohhhhhh! Well that's going to get expensive! I'm like...huh? He says, yeaaaaaaaah...the CHEAPEST I've seen that done is minimum $3,000. No kidding, I couldn't hold it in any longer and blurted out "you're sh!tting me" . He says they have to level the floor to manufacturer's specifications blah blah blah.... I then ask how he knows since he didn't even bother to looks at my pictures? He stands there with a dumb look on his face. I walk off.

I'm going to put off firewood gathering and working on my cars one weekend and do it myself without any supplies from Lowe's. I figure if I can put floor and trunk pans in a car I can handle a kitchen floor. And I found a MUCH cheaper place for windows that does good work.

It's the later ones. I'm 36, there's a huge difference between me and most people my age and the ones early 30's and younger. My personality was molded before participation trophies, hyper sensitivity, and parents not holding their kids accountable for their actions.

And to keep on topic, I still know more than most Lowe's employees I've encountered.
