Well was talking to my one of my sons tonight. Wanted to know what we did with ours. Ours is simple. We have a dirt/gravel driveway so we spread it there not only helps with traction but also helps with the snow and ice.

I fill a galvanized barrel and dump them in the leaf pile at the dump on a rainy day. Or in snow.

From the stove, into a metal trash can. From the trash can, with a long handled shovel, I sling/broadcast it over the lawn. Similar benefits as adding lime.

In all seriousness, this is a big issue. Almost every year a house around here burns down because of improperly handling of ashes. Last week a house caught on fire when the hot ashes were left in a pail in the garage. Put them in a steel pail with a lid and get them out of the house. Be careful where you dump them. Ashes can stay hot for days in a covered pail.

Is this kind of stupidity covered by insurance? Asking for a friend.

I chuck them out on the manure pile. If the pens have a lot of snow and ice I'll spread it in there, adds a little dark to help melt and it blends in good with the manure and nanny berries.

We do have a metal garbage can with a lid that the ash is put in right from the stove. The can is not close to.house. with this stove have not seen any hot chicks. The old stove was another matter.

To be clearer, I dump into a small galvanized steel trash can, once that's full, I dump into a large galvanized steel trash can, then onto the icy driveway.

It does help some with traction, but better aids in melting of the ice.

I prefer not to dump hot coals n ash directly, but have done so a couple of times.

Yep we still have it and I don't think it is for sale. We bought it well used 6 years ago cheap. You would have to talk with Chaz about. The only hot chick it attracted as far as I am concerned was me. Lol

After letting the ash cool in a metal bucket with a lid I dump them on the vegetable garden area then till them in in the spring. I have been thinking about spreading them on the yard as MikeInMa does.

I fill the low spots in my yard with mine. Little dirt in the spring and seed and good to go.

Everything goes into a galvanized trash can, some goes on the grass, some in the garden, and some into a sand and dirt mixture for the chicken bath. Currently the can is full, so the ashpan gets dumped into the driveway.

I have been giving my ashes to my neighbor for his driveway. He has a bit of a hill. My wife won't let me use ashes on the driveway cause she doesn't want ashes tracked into the house. I should scatter them on the lawn.
