    1) diesel used to be cheaper vs gas
    2) longevity was better
    3) maintenance was less
    4) reliability was better

    Now all above are reversed
    Diesel mechanic are more $
    Engine more $

    A excavator sub of mine sold his trucks only takes big jobs and pays to move his equipment.. He saves $ and time... That's sad and:loco: :crazy:

    I am looking to buy a new Kubota SVL95 skid steer and KX040 mini x. I have been running the numbers and it almost makes perfect sense to have somebody haul the stuff around for me. I won’t be able to react as fast but $70k for a new truck?????

    Well a straight 6 is certainly one of the most durable designs if nothing else...I can't name any "bad" straight 6's right now...a few dogs maybe, but none that didn't just last forever! Usually more simple to work on also.

    only thing that used to drive me crazy on my mid 80's 6.9 is it would constantly eat glow plug relays( $90 ea.). never did figure out why. sold it when the frame got soft- pretty much everything on that truck was ventilated by the orange death. 7.3 detailed in other thread. 6.0 full delete head studs ok so far but I am not running a chip. 99 V10 350 that was a work horse but 8mpg was a killer more orange death. Horkin-I am in Dodge county so get to bypass the emissions bull. Used to be I would just get a pass on the emissions because of truck weights- 250's and 350 , when i lived in Waukesha cty. that may have changed? all 3 were over 7000#
    New F150 with the diesel . That diesel has been around quite awhile overseas- just first time available here- haven't researched it- also do not know what changes between here and everywhere else Ford might have done for EPA clearance. Which is is of concern for all the green stamps they want. Can't say that I would find it worth while in a 1/2 ton even less in a 1/4 ton unless mpg was north of 40.

    You would run across that sometimes...an individual truck that ate relays...last one I dealt with got a starter relay and a push button on the dash to power the GP...end of problems. (gotta self time it though)

    Diesel engine is a $9,500 option from the factory if you include sales tax. Gas is $2.05 and diesel is $2.89 (check local listings).

    If you make up numbers and figure that a gasser is going to get 12MPG and a diesel is going to get 19MPG, you don't even break even with the diesel until 500K miles. Now, you probably aren't going to get 12 towing heavy with a gas motor, and 19 is probably a stretch for the diesel too ...so if you take that down to 9 and 17 you start to come out ahead at 150K, but that's before all the $80+ oil changes.

    And repairs...the newer diesels have proven less than reliable...most gassers don't have problems until they get some miles on 'em.
    And then the repair cost on diesels are :makeitrain"
    I don't know of one large fleet of light trucks that has not slowly phased out their old diesels for gas trucks...

    Which is why I have an Escape for my 96mile round trip 6 days out of 7. 250 5.4l stays in town, 250.6.0 stays out in the sticks. bring the 6.0 down for heavy work once a week ( also chase the dang mice out).

    I'm getting 20 to 21 MPG on summer fuel and 17 on winter fuel. Towing, those numbers drop about 7 or 8 MPG. They recommend changing the fuel filters at oil change intervals and it brings the total for oil, filter, and fuel filters up to $200 for a 2017 Dodge 2500.

    i bet it is closer to the same 90% that do not need a diesel along with 4x4. But hey 70 grand to get groceries...........cool. I am a contractor and my truck sits 5 days a week, work out of a van so tools are secure, carries more stuff too, dry even. Use the truck to haul the trailers, actually use it to just drive around with the dog more than anything.

    If you drive on roads, you don't need 4x4. I've gotten my 2WD truck stuck exactly 2 times since 2009...both times off road. If there's enough snow on the road that you need 4x4 then 90% of the population shouldn't be out on public roads anyway.

    lukem normally agree with you,. BUT last comment really depends on where. Off road? Does that mean paved road?

    I got front wheel drive with studded snow.. Roads so icy was spinning going into school parking lot..

    All roads here are ice covered.. Salt and brine not working too cold..

    Sand only at intersections.. Cousin stopped by this weekend has 4wd and studded snows.. Yota

    Cummins back on top................released at todays auto show opening

    For those that do some serious hauling, a new high output version of the Cummins 6.7L straight-six will be available in the 2019 Ram 3500. Thanks to a stronger block, forged connecting rods and a bigger turbo, the optional high output motor makes 400 horsepower and a staggering 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

    Paved or gravel...anything where you aren't going to sink into the ground because there's adequate base.

    I'm sure there are places where 4x4 is required in the winter but I stick by my statement, that of the entire population of drivers in this country, that people in those areas, who have a legitimate reason and skill to be out driving in those conditions, is somewhere around 10%.
