I spent a few hours in the woods today and brought in a carry all load of red oak that I bucked last spring. I went back for a 2nd load at a spot that had a cluster of 2 white oak and 2 shag bark tops over a small creek. It was a puzzle with spring and compression, I went slowly and got it manageable until the big rounds were dropping into the water so I stopped until I can get back with waterproof boots to wade the creek. I usually wouldn't go to that much work but I can't let shag bark and white oak go to waste.
I probably only brought up half a cord and it has to be split yet but it feels good to do some firewood work after taking off about 3 weeks. There's probably another half cord of white oak between what's over and in the creek and a pile I bucked last year.
I know pictures or it didn't happen but I didn't take my phone with me today.

The 1st pic is the white oak I fished out of the creek with a little shag bark and some walnut on top. I definately need weight on the front of the tractor, front wheels didnt touch the ground most of the way and had to steer with the brakes.
Second pic is the wood I brought up yesterday, red oak on the bottom and white oak and shag bark on top. 20190109_144932.jpg 20190109_144925.jpg

I’m really jealous, I haven’t been able to get into the woods for a really long time. I used to work second shift so I could spend my mornings in the woods. I really miss it.

That makes for a good day. Great to get as much use out of a tree as it can give. Good Hoosier lumber and firewood.
With my boiler I have found each hour of steady equates to a week of burning.

At my age my efficiency isn't that good but since I'm retired it really doesn't matter.

That brought back memories. Many times I've had to steer with brakes, but that was years ago. It works. Sort of reminds one of driving on ice.

My tractor has the setup for brake steering but I've never tried it.

Bang you motivated me. Got home and got into the tree tops. Cut into rounds, a nice cherry, Osage orange, oak and some maple. Going to keep at it until my helpers and the weather align and have them split like crazy.

I have one 60 leaner cut most way through and will let nature finish it. When they are all jumbled like pickup sticks with tension, ya gotta just move to another area and let it solve itself.

Snowing this weekend so it will be a while. But it’s next year supply anyhow

    Perfect temp for sawing though.

I use the brakes to help steer when I'm mowing and need to do a tight 180.
