You mean about me hearing the saws while in my yard? Our crown land is real close to where I live. I spend lots of time poking around in the woods near my house and I have certain trees picked out that I hope will end up in my truck but since they are on crown land they are free to who ever comes along and takes them down legally. Sometimes I get to busy to take them down but will stop and adore them while walking the dog and then get annoyed when they are gone when I pull up with the truck. As far as the yard trees in town... I cant help but follow the sound of saws to see whats going on like others have mentioned. Sometimes I just drive by but other times Ill get out and strike up a conversation. Its amazing what people will take to the dump. Im especially fond of fruit trees for cooking.
A few years ago I bought a fuel wood permit for some state land on top of the mountain behind my house. I took the time to search out dead standing trees and actually marked out the location by mileage in a notepad. Kinda like you said whoever else bought a permit (or even worse didn't) had a legal right to those trees also. I lost a lot of " my trees". On a Sunday my wife and sons and I cut down a huge dead oak, cut andsplit the trunk and loaded it up and left the top for the next day. I arrived at a large pile of sawdust Monday after work. No more cutting on public land for me.
By me very few people burn wood. So trees that are no longer trees are pretty much a burden for the owners. This is like being the apex predator locked up with the hens... Easy pickins.
Interesting. We are surrounded by Tree farm licences and so we can only have trees that are already down, left from the harvesting process. Even then, the timber companies want you to have a free firewood permit for the different areas around here. Walking into the woods to fall a tree is a real no-no.
We actually have quite a few areas that are active logging areas which we arent able to remove any wood... not even out of slash piles which I dont understand. I remember you and I or maybe it was campinspecter and I chatting about this last year and I found it odd that you guys cant take down standing dead trees, with your kind of moisture it sure would be nice for you. We have to leave the real big ones or the ones that are obvious habitat trees. We also are required to have a free harvesting license like you.
I got a very late Christmas gift today. My wife ordered this a while ago and it just arrived today. I think she is finally starting to get it
