Chilly yesterday, but going up to 50 today. Threw a bunch of Oak splits in before work..............Going to be pretty chilly for the rest of the week and into the weekend........Hopefully I'll be seeing a lot more of this from my furnace usage report

We usually get a few of those -40 C or colder days every winter on a normal year, but I'd rather have cold and calm than slightly warmer with wind. I think it was New Years we hit -36 C feels -47 C with wind (-32 f feels -52 f) and that felt pretty ugly. But I just look at weather in cold parts of Alaska and I feel better about Sask. weather.:D

I did check our records, and the coldest it's ever been here was -56 C or -70 F, but that was in the 1890's.

Had a strong wind yesterday , got a nice kindling Fire going and added some lumps of wood, wind were howling , flames died and I had a puff of smoke come out of the fire .
Just wandered if anyone had head of this before or is there some thing wrong with how my Fire is set up .

I agree wind is nasty when you add cold. Thats probably why you quote wind chills... We had a cold year last year with temps down to -37.5c/-35.5f and most years dip below -30c but Im ok if it doesnt go colder than that!

Holding 40. This morning sun and rain took turns. I think the rain has settled in for the afternoon. Was just putting Holly on the leash when a roll of thunder went through. Holly beat me to the door. She does not like thunder but if the guys are target shoot she is right there. Rain turning to snow about bed time. 1 - 3".

Presently a pleasant 58* with some wind and no fire. A front is coming in tonight and the wind will increase to 45mph gusts with the temp. dropping to 26*. Tomorrows high 28* and low20* It will be dropping into the teens Thurs. night. I guess I will get to see how the new stove does.
Spent the morning with stove maintenance and bring wood in for the coming cold. The wood was mainly Honey Locus with a little Beech and Ash mixed in.

I think it adds a little context. If you're out in -20 C, sunny, dead calm, it's not bad to go out and do stuff, but add 10-20-30 mph wind in there, and I'd rather go hide.:shiver:

Just one guys opinion, but your geography and direction of wind can mess with your fire depending how it flows over the chimney. I don't know the smart guy book explanation, but I do know it's a thing at least for me. Moderate wind speed from pretty much any direction and the effects are neutral. Stronger winds from the north or west might give a little draft boost. The same winds from the south make a noticeable turbo charge (increased draft), and from the east, start to negatively affect how the stove drafts. Almost as if it's fighting the fire, even though it pulls smoke up and out, it doesn't want to light up as easy, almost like someone is fanning the flames up and down. This is overcome with a higher than normal stack temp, but still is kind of an oddity. Once I get high winds things get even more noticeable. I won't go into how the pipe damper changes things, but it is possible the wind is just messing with you like in my example. It could be other things as well, just giving some food for thought

Southern Alberta is bad for winds. There have been 180km/112mi plus winds lately causing mayhem! Check this out....

Windy, cooler, (20) and not enough snow to warrant shoveling yet. About an inch.

33F here with a stiff E wind now. Supposed to go WSW & give us some lake snow by morning. "Colder" the next few days 20's & teens at night. I'm with the others, cold not a huge deal, wind sucks the warmth from everything. Elm in the boiler.
